Book Fair this week
Summitt’s Spring Book Fair runs through this Friday, April 23. This pet-themed event is sure to be the “purr-fect” place for your student to “dig up” a good book and for you to “sniff out” some adorable gifts for Teacher Appreciation and Mother’s Day. We could use a few more volunteers during peak times (7:30-8:30 am and 2:30-3:30 pm) and to help make Family Night (5:30-7 pm, Thursday, April 19) a “doggone” good time! Sign up up now: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d49afa62aa7f85-summitt

Here are a few extra “treats”:

  • If your child is bringing cash to buy books, remember that tax will be added to the cost of the books. Here’s a handy guide to find out how much money you need to bring to cover for tax.

  • Snap a pic of your little puppies and kitties using the pet-theme photo booth props next to Clifford’s doghouse.

  • Encourage your student to wear his or her favorite pet clothing or accessory (such as a dog-face T-shirt, chameleon earrings, or cat-ear headband) this Friday for Summitt’s Pet Day.

  • Who is human’s best friend? Help us answer the age old question by casting your ballet for cats or dogs. For every $2 you or your student donate to All for Books, you get 1 raffle ticket to vote for either “cats” or “dogs.” There will be daily drawings from each container to see who gets to “save” a stuffed puppy or kitty from the Book Fair “pound” and bring him or her home to snuggle.

CATCH Family Night on Thursday
Our 10th annual CATCH Family Fun Night will be held on Thursday, April 19th from 5:30-7 pm. We will have many ways to get active with your family! We will also be teaming up with the Book Fair in the library… we hope to see you there!

  • Skate Night at Playland Skate Center, 8822 McCann on Friday, April 20, 6-11 p.m. Cost is $8 per skater. This Skate Night set-up is during their regular business hours so people from the community will be there.

Snacks with the Principal
Do you have a Kindergarten or Pre-K student starting Summitt next fall? If so, please join us for Snacks with the Principal on Friday, April 20, at 9:30 am in the cafeteria. Mrs. Standish, cafeteria staff, and student leaders will introduce the incoming students to the cafeteria and how we eat our meals at Summitt. Your student will have a chance to walk through the hot lunch line and eat a snack at the cafeteria tables. This is a great way for parents and students to learn what to expect next year.

Save the dates for these upcoming events as well:
Storytime with the Librarian – Friday, May 4th, 9 a.m.
Workout with the P.E. teachers – Wed, May 23rd, 3 p.m.

This event is FREE for the entire family. There will also be a variety of cultural dishes to sample and fabulous entertainment to watch. Don’t forget to break open your piggy bank because Jim’s Ice will also be selling some delicious cold refreshments!

There are a few open spots still available for individual performances (1-5 minutes). If your child would like to participate and perform on stage, please fill out the link below by NOON Friday April 20, 2018. https://goo.gl/forms/go5VGhCaejsEQvwN2

Administrative Professionals Appreciation Week
Help Summitt celebrate Elizabeth Flores, Lisa Matuke, and Shana Pokorny next week, April 23-27. These three do so much for our school community—all while answering the constant buzzing at the front door! Stop by to say “thank you,” send a card or note to school, bring a special treat, or help answer the front door. Let’s make next week special for them.

Meet our new principal
Please join Associate Superintendent Hicks and our new principal on Tuesday, May 1st at 6 pm in the Summitt Cafeteria. We look forward to meeting our new principal as soon as he/she is approved and announced at the April School Board meeting on April 30.

Order School Supplies
We have collaborated with 1st Day School Supplies to help parents and teachers get the exact supplies needed for the school year without the hassle and aggravation of shopping at Wal-Mart, Target or HEB. This is convenient, easy and hassle free, plus the prices are competitive! So this summer as the temperature hits over 100 degrees and lines at the checkout counter are a mile long … make sure you have purchased school supplies from the comfort of your own home!

Math Pentathlon
Summitt Math Pentathlon is gearing up for next year! This national program incorporates math principles into fun board games designed to enhance problem solving, computational, geometric/spatial, and logical reasoning skills. Teamwork, good sportsmanship, sharing ideas, and communication skills are also stressed. Let’s meet up and play some games! Email [email protected] for more info/to get involved.  https://www.mathpentath.org/

Spring pictures due
The spring pictures came home with your student(s) last week. Parents now have the opportunity to purchase from the package and customize their purchase to meet their needs. There is no obligation to purchase and any unselected prints need to be returned to the school. Students returning packages/money will receive a responsibility pencil from the teacher. Please return full picture package (if you do no wish to buy), partial picture purchase or full package purchase (with money enclosed) by Friday, April 27, 2018.

Got the time?
This section features volunteer opportunities with specific time estimates. Check here each week to see what’s needed. That way, if you “got the time,” you can help out regularly for 5 to 15 minutes, or for a couple hours on a one-time project.

  • If you have anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour, please check your teacher’s workroom box. Many are needing last-minute copying and laminating as they work on end-of-year books and activities.

  • If you have have any time today (Wednesday) before 3:30 pm, tomorrow (Thursday) from 7:45 am to 7:00 pm, or Friday from 7:45 am to noon, please consider holding open the doors for visitors coming to the book fair.

Summitt PTA will award either one (1)  $600 scholarship or two (2) $300 scholarships, depending on the number of qualified applicants. If you want to know if a certain apartment complex or house on a certain street is in Summitt’s school zone, there is a website that will help. Go to http://mobilityblueprint.net/, click on Go to Map, and you can either register or just sign in as a guest by putting in your Zip Code. From there, you can enter in an address or school to find out the schools in that area.
