Eagle Fest cannot happen without day-of-event volunteers. We need every family to volunteer 30 minutes of their time to staff their child’s classroom booth. We DO NOT have extra college student volunteers this year, so it’s important that Summitt families sign up to help. We’ve made it easy on you this year – all signups will be done on Sign Up Genius (no registration required). Signups are listed first by grade/ then alphabetical by teacher’s last name.

Food Service workers week
Please remember our cafeteria staff and all of the work they do for us by saying thank you to them in commemoration of Food Service Workers Appreciation Week, October 12-16.
Counselors’ Chronicle
In an effort to keep parents informed about what is going on in the counseling realm, we have decided to start a reoccurring post to the newsletter. We hope to update it at least every few weeks with information that we hope you will find valuable.
Middle School Information – We have started to receive communication from Murchison and the magnet schools about preparations for next year’s 6th graders.
November 2- Fulmore, Kealing, and Ann Richards will be presenting information from 9-10 to 5th grade students. Murchison will most likely also be presenting student information but has not yet confirmed the time.
November 23- Murchison Middle School Showcase-all 5th grade students will travel by bus to MMS and will visit from 9:30-10:45.
College Shirt Day Every Monday – To promote college and career readiness, we are inviting students to join Summitt staff in wearing college t-shirts on Mondays. It is really fun to see all the colleges that staff and students wear and to start conversations about them.
PALS – Summitt is participating in the PALS program with Anderson High School. Every Tuesday we have 30 AHS students who will be coming to mentor some of our Summitt students. These students were selected by teachers and staff. We are feeling very fortunate to be participating in this great experience.
Attendance Incentives – We will be starting the attendance incentive program again very soon. Please make sure your student is at school and on time so that their class can be eligible to win the incentives!!
SEL – Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum has begun here at Summitt. The Anderson vertical team was brought on board this school year for this wonderful district wide initiative. Every week, each and every class should be receiving a 30 minute lesson from their homeroom teacher that focuses on social and emotional skills. The topics covered so far this year are: being respectful, attentive listening, self-talk, being assertive, and empathy. Ask your child about these skills and what they are learning.
Guidance Curriculum – Now that Sandy Cumming is back on the counseling team, we will begin classroom guidance. Mrs. Cumming will be doing the primary grades PK-2 and Mrs. Cardosa will be doing (3-5). We will update more information about lessons as we progress.
Need homeroom parents
Please consider signing up to be a homeroom parent for one of these classes. You do not have to do all the work. You will be the liaison between the class parents and the teacher. A homeroom parent coordinator will provide you with materials. If you are interested, please email [email protected] with your name, contact information, and the teacher for whom you would like to be homeroom parent.

Message from Principal Standish
Thank you for a successful Soaring Skyward Day this past Friday. It was amazing seeing everything come together. It was awesome seeing all of the smiling faces. This could not have happened without everyone’s help and support. We all were needing a day away from the regular routine. The teachers are back to schedule focused on their lessons and your children. Thank you for your continued support of Summitt campus, staff and of our PTA.

PE News
Marathon Kids has new program and we are excited to be a part of it. Marathon Kids has partnered with Nike to bring Austin ISD an exciting new look to the program. We are the only district in the nation that gets to participate for free.
Miles logged for MK will no longer be done outside of school. All walking/running will be done during their WOW time during school hours. The goal this year is that all students will complete 4 Marathons…for a total of 104.8 miles. Students will keep a log in their classroom and each completed marathon will be turned in for an immediate prize in PE class. Prizes include an exclusive Nike T-shirt for completing the first marathon, shoelaces for the 2nd, shoe tags for the 3rd and a Nike bracelet when the final marathon log is complete. We have been talking to the kids about the new program and they are very excited!!
All students must participate in the program as it is district policy that Marathon Kids activities have replaced the state mandated WOW (Work Out for Wellness) time. However, if you would NOT like your child to receive these free prizes from Nike throughout the year… you may opt-out by emailing me at [email protected].
Also, please mark your calendars for a very special Marathon Kids Kick-off at The University of Texas on Saturday, October 17th. The fun starts at 10 am.

Taking care of the Fish Tank
We are asking for a volunteer or class volunteer to be responsible for the campus fish tank in the main hall. It needs a lot of TLC and daily up keep such as feeding the fish, cleaning the tank, adding water, purchasing food and supplies (paid for by the school). If a volunteer and/or class does not step up, the fish tank will be going away. Please consider this opportunity to support Summitt’s fish tank.
Library News
October promises to be an exciting month in the library! In addition to the spine-tingling, hair-raising, bone chilling stories of the season, we have a number of delightfully, frightfully fun activities going on as well. Some of the highlights include:
- Texas Book Festival, October 17 -18
- 3rd Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest, October 19 -30
- BookPeople-sponsored author visit, Soman Chainani, October 28th at 10 am for 3rd- 5th grades
- and quite possibly, a few more surprises to be revealed soon. . .

GT News
Testing of all Fall GT nominees will occur this month. I am currently working on a schedule and will be sure to send it out once it has been approved.
Additionally, the first ever (that I know of) GT Parent meeting was held last Thursday, October 1. We had a nice turnout, and have even put together a group of parent volunteers who will be helping organize at least 2 fall afterschool events. The first event will be be Monday, October 19th at 3pm in the library and is open to all students, not only GT students. More information will be forthcoming as details are finalized.
Mother/Son outing
Our first Summitt Mom and Son outing will take place Friday, November 13th from 7-9 p.m. at URBAN AIR! Stay tuned for ticket info. This event isn’t limited to moms–any special person in your child’s life is welcome.
Book Fair
Look for this new book at the Fall Book Fair (Nov. 16-20) for Grades K-2 – Monsters Love Underpants by Claire Freedman, illustrated by Ben Cort. Monsters like to be big, hairy, and scary. But what they love is wearing bold, colorful underpants. Some prowl through dungeons wearing squeaky armor pants, and some romp in the swamp with slimy pants. Monsters under the sea wear jewels found in treasure chests, while dancing monsters bop around wearing their Sunday best. And space monsters can be seen in the sky with the brightest undies in the universe. So if you find a monster lurking under your bed, hang on to your underpants, because it might be looking for your fanciest pair. Beware!

Not only do we raise money for our PTA to buy supplies for our school and fund field trips, we help many young readers buy books that they otherwise would not be able to have. Box Tops
Keep collecting those box tops! Box tops are on many everyday grocery items and every one is worth 10 cents for Summitt! Information night at Fulmore Middle School
Fulmore Middle School invites all 5th grade parents to our Fulmore Magnet Parent Information Nights on October 8th and November 3rd, 2015. Our information nights will be held in the Fulmore Middle School Cafeteria from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Our presentation will give parents the opportunity to learn about Fulmore’s Magnet Program and the application process. Families are welcome to call the Fulmore Magnet Office with any questions at 512-841-4916.
