Lockdown drill this Friday afternoon
In compliance with AISD policy, all lockdown drills are to be planned in advance and announced to parents and staff at least 24 hours in advance before the lockdown drill. Lockdowns are conducted for intruder or violence on campus. A lock down drill should take no longer than 30 seconds to complete and students will be given an opportunity to process the experience by their teacher.

In accordance with this policy this is our official notification that a lockdown drill will be conducted on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 2:20 PM.

STAAR Test next week
Students will take the STAAR Test next week, Tuesday, April 10 and Wednesday, April 11. Because students will be testing in all parts of the school, we ask that you do not come to have lunch with your child, even if they are not taking the test. Parents are not allowed on campus during STAAR testing due to confidentiality and security. Also, please do not schedule appointments on the days your child is taking the test. Here’s the schedule:

Tuesday – 4th grade writing, 5th grade math
Wednesday – 5th grade reading

Librarian Appreciation Week next week
AISD is proud to honor and recognize the efforts of our hardworking library workers on April 9-13. It is the dedication of these professionals that keep our libraries vibrant and indispensable – and that is truly worth celebrating. In commemoration of School Library Week, the district encourages students, staff members, families, volunteers and community members to take a moment  to thank AISD library professionals for the services they provide to students and the district. Please remember our librarian, Denise Richey, and all of the hard work she does for us by saying thank you to her in commemoration of Librarian Appreciation Week!!

Summitt Alumni Scholarship

High school seniors in Austin ISD who attended at least 3 years at Summitt are encouraged to apply for the Summitt Alumni Scholarship. Summitt PTA will award either one (1)  $600 scholarship or two (2) $300 scholarships, depending on the number of qualified applicants. Spring Fling tickets on sale soon!
Mark your Calendar – Spring Fling & Silent Auction on Saturday, May 5.  Tickets for this year’s Spring Fling and Silent Auction will go on sale on April 16. At this adult-only fundraiser, you will have the opportunity to bid on items like ACL Live concert tickets, Schlitterbahn Waterpark tickets, an American Girl Doll and much more. All of the proceeds raised will go to supporting technology instruction at Summitt.

Got the time?
This section features volunteer opportunities with specific time estimates. Check here each week to see what’s needed. That way, if you “got the time,” you can help out regularly for 5 to 15 minutes, or for a couple hours on a one-time project.

  • If you can spare 15 minutes after the 7:45 am bell, please stay to open the door for late students.

Lego Camp at Summitt starting soon

A LASA high school student who is also a brother of a Summitt student is offering a free robotics program at Summitt beginning April 17.

The top 20 4th and 5th graders will be chosen based on interest in robotics, and this number may go up based on the number and quality of applications! The program is FREE, and all materials will be provided! The program will run from April 17th to May 8th on Tuesdays in Ms. Neill’s room from 4:30pm-6pm.

Art Camp with Mr. Jones
Summitt Art teacher, Mr. Gordon Jones, is offering 2 Art Camps this summer on June 4-8 and June 11-15. This is open to all students (you do not have to be at Summitt) who are entering grades 2-6. You can choose either the full day or half day program. The first week, students will learn Scuplting/Carving and Paper Crafts. The second week will have Drawing and Found Object Creation. Free parenting workshop
Managing Meltdowns and Tantrums, How to Cool Off 3-10 year olds – Austin Child Guidance Center (810 W. 45th Street) will have a free workshop on Wednesday, April 11, 6-7:30 p.m. When children have a hard time managing their emotions it can turn into meltdowns and tantrums. Meltdowns and tantrums can be effectively prevented, managed, and treated. In this workshop, parents will be able to tell the difference between a meltdown and a tantrum, will learn tools to respond to and prevent meltdowns and tantrums, and will be given resources for when to seek additional help.

Summer Art Camp
Did you know The Austin Artery hosts an all day art camp in our neighborhood for school aged children? They have weekly themes of weaving, clay, and much much more. Camps start June 11th and continue through August 10th. You can register at www.theaustinartery.com

Austin Sunshine Camp
Through the generous support of the Young Men’s Business League, Austin Sunshine Camps provides FREE fun-filled overnight summer camp programs for low income children of the greater Austin Area. All summer camp programs are provided FREE of charge to campers that meet the camp enrollment qualifications. Austin Sunshine Camps provides a variety of activities for campers to participate in including swimming, arts and crafts, science, and sports. Additional activities include canoeing, cooking, and ropes course activities.

Each child must meet one (1) of the three (3) camp enrollment qualifications:

  • Qualify for the school free & reduced meals income guidelines

  • Qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) OR be a

  • Foster Child

Enrollment is limited and is first come, first serve. Priority is given to applications received on or before Friday, April 20th, 2018. However applications are accepted throughout the summer. AISD has a website that allows families to see exactly what apartments, duplexes, streets, etc are in each school attendance area. If you want to know if a certain apartment complex or house on a certain street is in Summitt’s school zone, there is a website that will help. Go to http://mobilityblueprint.net/, click on Go to Map, and you can either register or just sign in as a guest by putting in your Zip Code. From there, you can enter in an address or school to find out the schools in that area.
