Field Days this week

Break out the tropical clothes and leis because Summitt’s Hawaiian Field Days will be on Thursday, April 26th and Friday, April 27th. Kinder, 1st and 2nd grades will have stations from 8-10:30 am on Thursday and grades 3-5 will have station time on Friday morning. The 5th grade students will help run stations for the younger grades on Thursday! We will need a few parent volunteers to help run stations for our older grades.  Please email me at [email protected] if you are able to volunteer on Friday morning! After each field day, the PTA will sell snacks for 25 cents each. Crush it Cones will be available for $3-6.

Multicultural Night on Friday

On Friday, April 27, at 6 pm, Summitt will be having their 2nd Multicultural Night to celebrate the diverse cultures of Summitt. Over 12 different countries and heritages will be represented. This event is FREE for the entire family. There will also be a variety of cultural dishes to sample and fabulous entertainment to watch. Don’t forget to break open your piggy bank because Jim Jim’s Water Ice will also be selling some delicious cold refreshments!

Vision/hearing screening next week
Vision and hearing screening will be held on May 2 and May 3 for 1st, 3rd and 5th grades.

UIL results
On Saturday, April 21, Summitt hosted the UIL Academic Meet for the elementary schools in north Austin. Schools in attendance were Doss, Davis, Hill, Summitt, Ridgetop, Bryker Woods, and Highland Park. Summitt was represented by 48 well-behaved, high-achieving students.  These third, fourth, and fifth grade students earned 14 first place, 17 second place, 16 third place, 11 fourth place, and 6 fifth place ribbons. Kudos to them. Also, thank you to the faculty members and parents who volunteered and made the meet a success.

Library News
Checking out books
While students will continue to visit the library throughout the month of May, our last day for student and parent check-outs will be Friday, May 11. All student and parent books will be due by, Friday, May 18. Please start corralling any books that have been left at grandma’s, in the back seat, at daycare, etc. Thank you!

Book Fair update
Thank you for a great book fair! As you may or may not know the Spring book fair is an exclusive library fundraiser. All proceeds benefit the Summitt library by supplementing our annual book budget –a paltry $2 per student!!! We had a super turn-out for a Paws for Books Book Fair, and some of the highlights include:

• raised over $350 in donations to help 36 Summitt students purchase books

• gave away $60 worth of books for teachers–which is to say nothing of all the families who supported classroom libraries by buying off Teacher Wishlists

• “adopted” out 2 dozen puppies and kitties

• raised nearly $4000 in cash for the library

A huge thank you to all the moms who came out and volunteered with set up, student preview, cashier, and clean up. MVP award goes to Alexa Keller and Alisa Dean for countless hours spent helping me from start to finish, as well as so many kids counting change, and choosing books. That being said, I’d be remiss if I did not also mention by name Heather Roell, Ginger Garana, Evette Alvarado, Sharon Reed, Kerstin Stewart, Editt Law, Kate Carlson, and Jessica Pedemonte. It truly takes  a village, and these ladies are my tribe! I couldn’t possibly get this thing off the ground without them.

Lastly. . . From the Library with Gratitude
I wanted to extend a great big thank you to all the students, teachers, and families who sent a card, a note, a drawing, a paw-print, or any other various token of love during Librarian Appreciation week. I am always so touched by the kindness and generosity of this community. I know when I get a basket filled with goodies, or see posters hung up on the walls, a coordinated effort went in to making that happen– emails, shopping trips, hours spent cutting and pasting.  The same can be said for my colleagues who take the time to buy me flowers, a gift card, or bake me a special treat. As one of you– an overscheduled parent of two, and a frenzied educator busily trying to wrap up another year, I appreciate the thought, I really do, because I know what it cost you– your precious time. Thank you. I appreciate all of you so much, too. As always it is my pleasure to serve as your librarian.

Meet our new principal next week
Please join Associate Superintendent Hicks and our new principal on Tuesday, May 1st at 6 pm in the Summitt Cafeteria. We look forward to meeting our new principal as soon as he/she is approved and announced at the April School Board meeting on April 30.

Movie Night next week
In honor of May the 4th, come to Summitt’s Special Movie Night!!! On Friday, May 4, we will have a special showing of “Lego Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back” before our feature movies.  Our feature movies will be “Coco” and “Despicable Me 3.” Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Lego Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back will begin at 6:45 pm on both screens and the feature movies will start right after around 7:05 pm. A ticket will get you a snack pack with popcorn, a sweet, and a drink. Bring a blanket or a chair if you’d like. We will have additional snacks, treats, and glow in the dark items for purchase.

The week of Summitt Movie Night: Wednesday through Friday tickets will be on sale before school in the car line (for exact change or check) and after school in the Great Hall for $5. Tickets at the door will be $6. You may also purchase tickets by filling out the purchase tab at the bottom of the movie flyer and return it to your child’s teacher along with your check or cash payment. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Proceeds will benefit the Koblenz Exchange Program. Come spend some quality time with your child on Friday before you head to Spring Fling with the adults on Saturday.

Administrative Professionals Appreciation This Week

Help Summitt celebrate (from left to right in photo) Shana Pokorny, Elizabeth Flores, and Lisa Matuke this week. These three do so much for our school community—all while answering the constant buzzing at the front door! Stop by the front office to create an emoji with a special message to hang on the wall, send a card or note to school, bring a special treat, or help answer the front door. Let’s make this week special for them.

Summitt’s Principal and Vice Principals Appreciation Next Week
Summitt will celebrate our principal, Dedra Standish, and our vice principals, Victoria O’Neal and Celines Gauthier, next week on April 30-May 4. Summitt Spirit Night with the Round Rock Express
Join other Summitt families at the Dell Diamond to watch the Round Rock Express vs. New Orleans Baby Cakes baseball game on Friday, May 11 at 7 p.m. Lawn seats are $6, and reserved seats are $12. It will be STAR WARS NIGHT! Be ready to meet Anakin Skywalker, Princess Leia and witness a lightsaber battle. Don’t forget to stick around post-game for Friday Fireworks! Art Contest at PE
Our Fuel Up to Play 60 Team is hosting an art contest for grades 3-5. We will talk to students in the upcoming rotation starting Monday. Healthy HeART Contest Rules

1) Must be submitted on an 8-by-11 sheet of white paper

2) Drawing or cartoon must include ONE physical activity and ONE fruit or vegetable

3) Entries must be turned in by Friday, May 18th

ONE Winner from each grade level (3 total winners) will win a smoothie of their choice the last week of school and their artwork will be displayed in the PE Hallway!

Order School Supplies
We have collaborated with 1st Day School Supplies to help parents and teachers get the exact supplies needed for the school year without the hassle and aggravation of shopping at Wal-Mart, Target or HEB. This is convenient, easy and hassle free, plus the prices are competitive! So this summer as the temperature hits over 100 degrees and lines at the checkout counter are a mile long … make sure you have purchased school supplies from the comfort of your own home!

Math Pentathlon
Summitt Math Pentathlon is gearing up for next year! This national program incorporates math principles into fun board games designed to enhance problem solving, computational, geometric/spatial, and logical reasoning skills. Teamwork, good sportsmanship, sharing ideas, and communication skills are also stressed. Let’s meet up and play some games! Spring pictures due on Friday
The spring pictures came home with your student(s) last week. Parents now have the opportunity to purchase from the package and customize their purchase to meet their needs. There is no obligation to purchase and any unselected prints need to be returned to the school. Students returning packages/money will receive a responsibility pencil from the teacher. Please return full picture package (if you do no wish to buy), partial picture purchase or full package purchase (with money enclosed) by Friday, April 27.

Got the time?
This section features volunteer opportunities with specific time estimates. Check here each week to see what’s needed. That way, if you “got the time,” you can help out regularly for 5 to 15 minutes, or for a couple hours on a one-time project.

• If you have a couple of hours in the afternoon this Thursday, April 26, or Friday, April 27, please sign up to help at the Field Day concession stand: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f48a8ae2aabf49-field1.

• If you have time Wednesday, May 2, or Thursday, May 3, please volunteer to assist with vision and hearing screening, including escorting classes to and from testing and other duties. Speak with Shana in the front office if you are interested.

• If you have anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour, please check your teacher’s workroom box. Many are needing last-minute copying and laminating as they work on end-of-year books and activities.

Summitt Alumni Scholarship due next week
High school seniors in Austin ISD who attended at least 3 years at Summitt are encouraged to apply for the Summitt Alumni Scholarship. Summitt PTA will award either one (1)  $600 scholarship or two (2) $300 scholarships, depending on the number of qualified applicants. Information on requirements is at https://summitteagles.org/about-us/alumni-scholarship/. Deadline for applications is due May 1, 2018.

Spring Fling is next week

Spring Fling Tickets on Sale until Friday
This year’s Spring Fling is on Saturday, May 5, from 6:30 -9:30 pm at Norris Conference Center on Anderson Ln. and tickets are now on sale through Friday, April 27th. Tickets are $30 per person and include entrance to the event, heavy appetizers, and 1 drink ticket. Tickets to the event will not be available after Friday.

There are several ways to purchase tickets:
• Return the bottom portion of the Monday folder flier with cash or check to your child’s teacher.

• Purchase in the Great Hall before and after school 4/23 – 4/27.

Can’t make it to Spring Fling but still want to support technology instruction at Summitt?

• All of the Silent Auction items, Teacher Time and Talent, and Classroom Creations will be bid on through an online auction software program this year, so now you can participate in the auction from wherever you have to be on May 5th. More information to come soon.

Adelphi Acre Anniversary Celebration

Back by Popular Demand- Managing Meltdowns and Tantrums, How to Cool Off 3-10 year olds
When children have a hard time managing their emotions it can turn into meltdowns and tantrums. Meltdowns and tantrums can be effectively prevented, managed, and treated. In this workshop, parents will be able to tell the difference between a meltdown and a tantrum, will learn tools to respond to and prevent meltdowns and tantrums, and will be given resources for when to seek additional help. It will be on Monday, May 7, 6-7:30 pm, at Austin Child Guidance Center, 810 W. 45th Street. Cost is free. Registration and more information here.

Art Camp with Mr. Jones

Summitt Art teacher, Mr. Gordon Jones, is offering 2 Art Camps this summer on June 4-8 and June 11-15. This is open to all students (you do not have to be at Summitt) who are entering grades 2-6. You can choose either the full day or half day program. The first week, students will learn Scuplting/Carving and Paper Crafts. The second week will have Drawing and Found Object Creation. Anderson Trojan Belles 2018 Spring Show
The Anderson Trojan Belles present their annual Spring Show, “SPELLBOUND” on April 26-28, in the Anderson High School’s Performing Arts Center.  The shows start at 7 pm each night. You won’t want to miss the Trojan Belles, Anderson Dance Guard, Senior Guys Dance, Newbie Team, MMS Junior Belles and much, much more!

School Ticket Sales
Tickets may be purchased on April 25, 26 & 27 (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) in the school cafeteria during lunch from 12:35pm – 1:20pm.Ticket price during cafeteria sales is $10 per ticket.  During cafeteria sales, AHS students may purchase one $5 ticket for the Thursday night show only.

Box Office Ticket Sales
Tickets are available at the Box Office on show nights- April 26, 27 & 28 (Thursday, Friday and Saturday). The Box Office opens at 6:15pm each night. Ticket price at the Box Office is $15.

AHS Speech and Debate Showcase
High schoolers wearing suits and presenting in front of judges? What’s it all about? Students nationwide are developing strong speech and debate skills that can serve them for a lifetime. Summer Art Camp
Did you know The Austin Artery hosts an all day art camp in our neighborhood for school aged children? They have weekly themes of weaving, clay, and much much more. Camps start June 11th and continue through August 10th. You can register at www.theaustinartery.com

Austin Sunshine Camp
Through the generous support of the Young Men’s Business League, Austin Sunshine Camps provides FREE fun-filled overnight summer camp programs for low income children of the greater Austin Area. All summer camp programs are provided FREE of charge to campers that meet the camp enrollment qualifications. Austin Sunshine Camps provides a variety of activities for campers to participate in including swimming, arts and crafts, science, and sports. Additional activities include canoeing, cooking, and ropes course activities.

Each child must meet one (1) of the three (3) camp enrollment qualifications:

• Qualify for the school free & reduced meals income guidelines

• Qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) OR be a

Enrollment is limited and is first come, first serve. Priority is given to applications received on or before Friday, April 20th, 2018. However applications are accepted throughout the summer. School boundary maps
AISD has a website that allows families to see exactly what apartments, duplexes, streets, etc are in each school attendance area. If you want to know if a certain apartment complex or house on a certain street is in Summitt’s school zone, there is a website that will help. Go to http://mobilityblueprint.net/, click on Go to Map, and you can either register or just sign in as a guest by putting in your Zip Code. From there, you can enter in an address or school to find out the schools in that area.
