Librarian Appreciation Week this week
AISD is proud to honor and recognize the efforts of our hardworking library workers on April 9-13. It is the dedication of these professionals that keep our libraries vibrant and indispensable – and that is truly worth celebrating. In commemoration of School Library Week, the district encourages students, staff members, families, volunteers and community members to take a moment  to thank AISD library professionals for the services they provide to students and the district. Please remember our librarian, Denise Richey, and all of the hard work she does for us by saying thank you to her in commemoration of Librarian Appreciation Week!! Please write a special message for Mrs. Richey on one of the paper paws in the front office. We’ll post them for her to see in the Great Hall next to the library.

Book Fair next week
Summitt’s Spring Book Fair is April 16-20. We need your help to make this pet-themed book fair a success. You can choose to volunteer from a variety of ways and times of day:

  • Set up and decorate one or more hours between 8 am and 3 pm on Friday, April 13

  • Indicate what yummy treats you will bring Friday, April 13, for Teacher Preview

  • Help cashier and assist students one or more shifts Monday through Friday morning

  • Consider working during our weekday rush hours: 7:30-8:30 am and 2:30-3:30 pm

  • Sign up to help out during evening hours for Family Night on Thursday, April 19

  • Choose one or more hours to help tear down/pack up the afternoon of Friday, April 20

CATCH Family Night next week
Our 10th annual CATCH Family Fun Night will be held on Thursday, April 19th from 5:30-7 pm at locations all around the school. We will have many ways to get active with your family! We will also be teaming up with the Book Fair in the library… we hope to see you there!

Activities will include a Parent Pacer Challenge, Camp Gladiator Obstacle Course, American Heart Association Jump Rope challenge, Trojan Pop Warner football throw and a dance party!  You will also have an opportunity to win some great prizes from our local HEB and participating vendors! Mark your calendars for this FREE family event! If you know of an individual or business in our community that would like to promote health and wellness at our CATCH Family Fun Night, please have them email Mrs. Comsudi at [email protected] or call 512-414-0587.

Summitt Family events coming up

  • Kona Ice truck will be at Summitt after school on Friday, April 13.

  • Summitt Family Night at Blue Baker on Wednesday, April 18, from 5-9 p.m. Get soups, sandwiches, pizza, and the best chocolate chip cookies in town! Our teachers will be walking around the restaurant selling fresh-out-of-the-oven cookies, so save room for dessert. Cookie sales from the teachers are cash only.

  • Skate Night at Playland Skate Center, 8822 McCann, 6-11 p.m on Friday, April 20. Cost is $8 per skater. Tell them you’re with Summitt and $3 goes to Summitt PTA. This Skate Night set-up is during their regular business hours so people from the community will be there.

  • As always, a portion of all Summitt Family events benefits Summitt PTA.

 

Spring Fling: Tickets go on sale NEXT WEEK!
Tickets for this year’s Spring Fling go on sale next Monday, April 16. Tickets will be $30 and includes heavy hors d’oeurves and 1 drink. Join us on Saturday, May 5 at the Norris Conference Center from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. to enjoy an adult-only fundraiser and silent auction while supporting technology instruction at Summitt.

Math Pentathlon
Summitt Math Pentathlon is gearing up for next year! This national program incorporates math principles into fun board games designed to enhance problem solving, computational, geometric/spatial, and logical reasoning skills. Teamwork, good sportsmanship, sharing ideas, and communication skills are also stressed. Let’s meet up and play some games! Spring pictures
The spring pictures will be coming home to your student(s). Parents now have the opportunity to purchase from the package and customize their purchase to meet their needs. There is no obligation to purchase and any unselected prints can be returned to the school. Students returning packages/money will receive a responsibility pencil from the teacher. Please return full picture package (if you do no wish to buy), partial picture purchase or full package purchase (with money enclosed) by Friday, April 27, 2018.

 

Got the time?
This section features volunteer opportunities with specific time estimates. Check here each week to see what’s needed. That way, if you “got the time,” you can help out regularly for 5 to 15 minutes, or for a couple hours on a one-time project.

  • If you have any spare time next week from 7:45 am to 3:30 pm, please consider holding open the doors for visitors coming to the book fair.

 

Summitt Alumni Scholarship
High school seniors in Austin ISD who attended at least 3 years at Summitt are encouraged to apply for the Summitt Alumni Scholarship. Summitt PTA will award either one (1)  $600 scholarship or two (2) $300 scholarships, depending on the number of qualified applicants. Information on requirements is at https://summitteagles.org/about-us/alumni-scholarship/. Deadline for applications is due May 1, 2018.

 

AISD and Community Events

 

Matador Fest
Future Murchison Matadors, everyone is invited to Matador Fest this Friday, April 13, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Murchison Middle School. There will be activities such as Laser tag, the Pringle Toss, a rock wall, Bingo, and more! We have gift baskets that include an Echo dot, a Google mini, an Eno hammock, and Beats headphones just to name a few! Does thinking about this much activity make you hungry? Well don’t worry! We will have the following food trucks at our wonderful event: Roppolo’s Pizza Food Truck, Nacho Average Food Truck, Kona Ice, Sweetness Bakery.

And the cherry on top of all these fun activities? A DUNK TANK with some of our own Murchison Middle School Staff! So far, Mr. Bromburg, Ms. Baxter, Ms. Timme, Coach Hutson, Coach Boe Williams, Coach Kuharski, and Principal Clark have all agreed to take their turn getting dunked by our students and families! Don’t miss this annual Murchison tradition! Art Camp with Mr. Jones
Summitt Art teacher, Mr. Gordon Jones, is offering 2 Art Camps this summer on June 4-8 and June 11-15. This is open to all students (you do not have to be at Summitt) who are entering grades 2-6. You can choose either the full day or half day program. The first week, students will learn Scuplting/Carving and Paper Crafts. The second week will have Drawing and Found Object Creation. Lego Camp at Summitt starting soon
A LASA high school student who is also a brother of a Summitt student is offering a free robotics program at Summitt beginning April 17.

Do you love to build with legos? Do you want to learn how to program? Do you want to have fun solving challenges with your friends? Then join the Summitt Robotics Program Today! The top 20 4th and 5th graders will be chosen based on interest in robotics, and this number may go up based on the number and quality of applications! The program is FREE, and all materials will be provided! The program will run from April 17th to May 8th on Tuesdays in Ms. Neill’s room from 4:30pm-6pm.

Dolphin Camp at Davis Elementary
Davis Elementary has camps on June 4-8 for elementary students who are interested. More information here.

Summer Fun!- Ages: Current Kinder and 1st graders.

Join Ms. Parker and Ms. Salzberg for a fun filled day of movie making Monday! Toy Tuesday! Wiggle Wednesday! Thinker Thursday! Field trip Friday- Bob Bullock Museum and lunch at the Capitol! We will make, build, invent, direct, and play all day every day! Cost: $250

Outdoor Fun!– Ages: Current 3rd -5th graders
Lead by: Ileana Ramirez & Harmony Richardson
Join Ms. Ramirez & Ms. Harmony in a week full of outdoor adventure. Students will participate in Arts & Craft lessons, hiking, canoeing, and fishing. Become one with nature and take advantage of this opportunity to become a certified Junior Ranger. Your child will love exploring the Texas Parks around us. Cost: $265

Let’s Go- LEGO Camp-Ages: Current 1st -3rd graders.
Lead by: Ms. Ashton
Love LEGOS? Then come construct and program all 12 LEGO We do Robots, solve engineering challenges, and have fun with LEGO games! Students will participate in a week long adventure of daily innovative creation. Cost: $235

Vet Clinic
The Lanier High School Agriculture Department is hosting our annual Spring Pet Vaccination Clinic on Monday, April 16 from 5-7 PM in the Agriculture Building. You can get all of the shots your dog or cat needs for $20 Discounted Flea, Tick and Heart Worm preventatives available, along with Bordetella (Kennel Cough) and routine worming. Cash, check, and credit cards are accepted. Lanier Veterinary students will also be trimming nails for $5 (cash only). Directions for accessing the Agriculture Department can be found on the flyer.

Parents Night Out
Anderson HS Robotics NIGHT of the ROBOTS is on Friday, April 27th, 5:30-9 pm, at Anderson HS. Enjoy a Parents Night Out, while your kids (K-5th) enjoy an evening of fun and all things robots. For more information go to: nightoftherobotsapril2018.splashthat.com

Camp Fun Brain
Camp Fun Brain offers summer camps at 3 locations in Austin and Cedar Park. This is for ages 5-10 years. More information is at https://www.campfunbrain.com/

Summer Art Camp
Did you know The Austin Artery hosts an all day art camp in our neighborhood for school aged children? They have weekly themes of weaving, clay, and much much more. Camps start June 11th and continue through August 10th. You can register at www.theaustinartery.com

Austin Sunshine Camp
Through the generous support of the Young Men’s Business League, Austin Sunshine Camps provides FREE fun-filled overnight summer camp programs for low income children of the greater Austin Area. All summer camp programs are provided FREE of charge to campers that meet the camp enrollment qualifications. Austin Sunshine Camps provides a variety of activities for campers to participate in including swimming, arts and crafts, science, and sports. Additional activities include canoeing, cooking, and ropes course activities.

Each child must meet one (1) of the three (3) camp enrollment qualifications:

  • Qualify for the school free & reduced meals income guidelines

  • Qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) OR be a

  • Foster Child

Enrollment is limited and is first come, first serve. Priority is given to applications received on or before Friday, April 20th, 2018. However applications are accepted throughout the summer. School boundary maps
AISD has a website that allows families to see exactly what apartments, duplexes, streets, etc are in each school attendance area. If you want to know if a certain apartment complex or house on a certain street is in Summitt’s school zone, there is a website that will help. Go to http://mobilityblueprint.net/, click on Go to Map, and you can either register or just sign in as a guest by putting in your Zip Code. From there, you can enter in an address or school to find out the schools in that area.
