Message from Principal Standish
Dear Parents/Guardians: It has been a busy week with the finalization of the District Leveling process and finalizing schedules. Thank you for the support during these situations. There have been questions concerning Summitt’s FIT class. FIT stands for ‘Flexible Instruction Time’. This is a thirty-minute period scheduled the same time for each grade level except for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. During this class, students are grouped together in order for students to receive differentiated instruction based on the student’s needs that are focused on the instructional curriculum of the reporting period. It is an intervention opportunity provided by Summitt’s staff. Throughout the school year, the groups may change based on student’s needs.

If you have any questions, please ask your student’s teacher or administration. I want to extend a thank you for your continual support of our over-crowded parking lots and the traffic pattern. Administration has spoken to our Campus Police support to provide on-site visits to assist in making our traffic flow continue without problems and offer suggestions. So, if you see a police office around campus, please provide a smile and wave of support. Thank you to all the parents/guardians who attended the Vietnamese Parent Information meeting this past Monday afternoon and to all the parents/guardians who attended their student’s Back to School on Tuesday evening! Have a wonderful rest of the week! Your Principal, Dedra Standish

Kona Ice on Friday
We have booked 2 trucks for our next Kona Ice day on Friday, Sept. 23 after school. (Please remember that students who take the bus or go to after school care cannot purchase Kona Ice. They will have an opportunity to purchase Kona Ice at Eagle Fest and at other events this year, so thank you for your patience and understanding.)

Skate Night next week
Join other Summitt Families for a rocking skate night on Wednesday, Sept. 28 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Playland Skate Center (8822 McCann). Which grade level will have the most students? It’s only $6 per skater. They have a playscape, arcade, and skate helpers for an additional fee.

Cafeteria Food Outside of the Service Area
There have recently been questions regarding whether or not students are allowed to take food outside of meal service areas. Reimbursable meals prepared for school nutrition programs are to be served and consumed in the cafeteria or other designated eating areas. However, in agreement with the Texas Department of Agriculture, AISD recognizes that with time-limited meal periods and the increased amount of fruits and vegetables offered at meals, some students may save some items for consumption at a later time.

The District’s goal is to provide students with healthy foods to fuel them for education each day, and if that means taking a component of their meal with them, the District encourages them to do so. There is no federal prohibition of students taking food outside of meal service areas. This practice not only helps in reducing potential food waste, but it also encourages consumption of healthy school meals. Food that is taken outside of designated meal service areas are intended to be consumed only by the student the meal was served to, during the regular school day, and not shared with family or friends.
