Soaring Skyward on Friday

Soaring Skyward is this Friday, October 2, 2015. Please come join your student and/or volunteer during this day of learning.

This day-long event will celebrate everything having to do with flight. There will be space-themed centers in the 5th grade areas, drones in the cafeteria, birds of prey on the blacktop, remote control airplanes in the gym, a helicopter on the track and a bubble concert with Science Buddies.

There will not be an assembly Friday morning in the cafeteria. Pre-Kg through 3rd grade students will wait in the great hall until 7:30 AM. Fourth and 5th grade students will wait until the 7:30 AM bell in the gym. Teachers will come and walk students to their class at the 7:30 bell. Students who eat breakfast in the morning will do so in the cafeteria.

Please send a sack lunch or let your child’s teacher know if you want one ordered from the cafeteria.

Koblenz Movie Night on Friday

Come join the fun at Summitt Movie Night on Friday, October 2nd. We will be showing “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” and “Home” in the cafeteria and the Great Hall.

A ticket will get you a snack pack with popcorn, a sweet, and a drink. Bring a blanket or a chair if you’d like. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movies start around 7 p.m.

The week of Summitt Movie Night:  Wednesday through Friday tickets will be on sale before school in the car line (for exact change or check) and after school in the Great Hall for $5. Tickets at the door will be $6. Message from Principal Standish

Has your student mentioned a time during the school day where they join a different group of students for a thirty minute time of learning? Some students may have referred to this time as ‘Enrichment’, ‘Intervention’ or even ‘Tutoring’. Summitt will be referring to this time as F.I.T. (Flexible Instruction Time). This is new at Summitt this school year. It is an opportunity for Response to Intervention (RTI). Everyday – every student has a thirty minute time to have their learning supported and/or skill retaught and/or have an opportunity for enrichment to meet each student’s area of need. The groups may change every nine weeks to meet the needs of students. Summitt staff is encouraged that this new opportunity will increase every student’s success in learning.

Summitt has several after school programs who use the Summitt playground after school. These organizations have paid building use fees in order to use these facilities. During these times, it is important to separate their students from the students who are not part of their program due to safety and insurance issues.  If you are on campus after school, please separate yourself from the areas they are using such as the play grounds, basketball court and/or the fields.

Dedra Standish, Principal

Need homeroom parents

Please consider signing up to be a homeroom parent for one of these classes. Eagle Fest is coming up in a little over two weeks and Halloween parties will be in a month. You do not have to do all the work. You will be the liaison between the class parents and the teacher and Eagle Fest coordinators.

A homeroom parent coordinator will provide you with materials. In fact, there are meetings this Thursday, October 1, at 7:45 am and 6:30 pm, in the Summitt library. If you are interested, please email [email protected] with your name, contact information, and the teacher for whom you would like to be homeroom parent. Thank you.

GT News

The fall Gifted and Talented nomination window has closed as of Friday, September 25.

The next step in the GT screening  process is testing and portfolio building. I will be ordering tests this week, as well as making a testing schedule.  I will be sure to notify parents of this schedule so that they can be sure to have their student well rested and fed on tests days. There really is no other preparation needed. The CoGAT is a test of students’ cognitive abilities, rather than review of material learned or not learned. This year the test will be given online in the computer lab or other quiet area where students can work uninterrupted. The test is usually administered over three separate test sessions during the school day. However, I may seek permission to test over several weekends, so as not to interrupt the classroom learning.

Classroom teachers will be creating a portfolio of work submitted by your student. They will include samples from each of the core subjects as well as anecdotes from classroom observations. All portfolios and test scores will be reviewed by the GT committee by November 16th, and parents will be notified shortly thereafter.

If you are interested in GT opportunities for your child, or learning opportunities to help challenge your student, I encourage you to come to our inaugural Parent Meeting this Thursday, October 1 at 6pm in the library.

Mother/Son event
