No School on Monday
Monday, September 24th will be our first professional development day, and it will also be a student holiday.  We look forward to bringing our learning from that day into the classroom!

Last Homeroom Parent Meeting Tonight
Tonight, Wednesday, September 19, at 7 pm at Silver Grill (on Parmer Lane), is the last scheduled homeroom parent informational session. We will go over the responsibilities of the position and the schedule of events at Summitt this year. We’ll also talk about recommendations on how best to communicate with your class families as well as organizational tips to make your school year easier. Dual language news
Mid-Autumn Festival

The Vietnamese Dual Language program will host the Mid Autumn (Tet Trung Thu) Festival on Sept. 28th at 6:30 pm – 8:30pm. Admission is $3 and dinner is $5/plate. Drinks and snacks will also be available for purchase. Cash only. There will be activities for kids and kids talent show, lion/dragon dance performance and a lantern parade at the end. More Lion Dance performance
If you did not get enough of our amazing students in the Lion and Dragon Dance Team, they will be performing at the Asian American Cultural Center off Duval/Jollyville at 2:15 pm. Come out and cheer for our Summitt team!

Martial Arts class
Also we are taking new students, 3rd grade and up for our Martial Arts class. Please register with Thay Pham. Parents meeting will be on Oct. 11 and trial practice on Oct. 18. Please check our monitor in the hallway for all info related to the VNDL Program, After School Program, Extra Curriculum activities as well as performances for the community.

Soaring Skyward next week
Our Summitt Eagles always look forward to Soaring Skyward, our day to celebrate Flight, on Friday, Sept. 28. This is an all-day event, starting at 8 a.m. in the cafeteria/gym and ending at 2:30 p.m. on the blacktop for our bubble dance. We will have guest speakers and exciting demonstrations together. We will also have lots of hands-on activities for the kids to get an immersive experience of space. Parents are encouraged to join your student and/or volunteer during this day of learning. But please remember to bring an ID and sign in and out at the office!

Library News
Sign-up for Birthday Book Club has begun, and less than a week in we have raised almost $1000 for our library. You can continue to sign-up for Birthday Book Club now through, Friday, October 12. I have a window of time to do sign-ups, so please sign up now even if your child’s birthday isn’t until the spring. The Google form can be found at : https://goo.gl/forms/YQ1WqoO0JrP4Ih3q1

No time to stop by the library? Feel free to fill out the form at home. I can choose a book for your child, or have your student come by during the school day to do it. Just write in “You choose” in the blank marked title. Thanks for your support!

GT Nominations
The Fall GT nomination window has opened! Beginning, Monday, Sept. 10 and running until Friday, Sept. 28, parents and teachers can nominate 3rd-5th graders to be screened for the Gifted and Talented program. Grades K-2 will be in the Spring.  Forms in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Arabic can be found online at: https://www.austinisd.org/advancedacademics/gifted. Please note that parents must complete both the Parent GT Nomination Form (grades K-5 only) and the Gifted Characteristics Checklist for Parents. Also, for any questions and to understand the program, please come to a general GT information meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 6:30 -7:30pm in the library.

Got the time?
This section features volunteer opportunities with specific time estimates. Check here each week to see what’s needed. That way, if you “got the time,” you can help out regularly for 5 to 15 minutes, or for a couple hours on a one-time project.

  • If you have anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour, please stop by the teacher workroom to see who needs help. Contact Karen Reyna ([email protected]) with questions.

  • If you are free 10:30 am to 11:30 am any day during the week, please consider helping out in the cafeteria. Pre-K and Kinder classes are still getting used to their lunchtime routines and need a little extra help. Contact Shana in the front office ([email protected]) with questions.

 

Math Pentathlon Informational Meeting
Want to learn more about Math Pentathlon at Summitt? Join us Monday, October 1, from 5:30 – 6:30pm in the Summitt library as we discuss details of this fun new club! Koblenz informational meeting
Would you like to know more about our teacher & student exchange program with Schenkendorf Elementary in Koblenz, Germany? Please join us on Thursday, October 4th at 5:30 pm in the Summitt library. This year our friends from Koblenz will be visiting us sometime in April. We will travel to Germany the following year in June 2020. See what the program is all about and how you can get involved.

EAGLE FEST 2018 NEWS

Mark your calendars for Summitt’s annual fall carnival fundraiser, Eagle Fest! Join your school on Saturday, October 20, from 3-6pm on the Summitt grounds for exciting games, fabulous prizes, a spooky haunted house, delicious food, and lots of school spirit!

Item Donations (prizes and drinks/chips/candy)
Eagle Fest is in need of small, unopened toys from restaurants like McDonalds, Chick Fil’A, Wendy’s, and Arby’s as well as larger “prize booth toys” in new or gently-used condition. A toy donation box will be set in the Great Hall near the Summitt Office.

In addition, every year we ask our wonderful Summitt families to help us out with food and drink donations. We sell the drinks and chips in the Food Court and use the candy, Pringles, and 2 Liter soda bottles as prizes. Signs have been set up along the wall in the Great Hall across from the office showing where to drop off your donations.

Pre-K Families – 12-24 Juice boxes

Kindergarten Families – 12-24 packs of Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, or Dr. Pepper

1st Grade Families – 2 liter bottles of soda or 12-24 bottles of water

2nd Grade Families – 12-24 individual snack size bags of chips

3rd Grade Families – Halloween candy, 2lb bag (individually wrapped, no chocolate please; it will melt),

Organizing sessions
Calling all moms!! Are you spinning your wheels and getting nothing done? Do you have a to-do list that just gets longer even though you’re TRYING!?! (PS – It’s NOT your fault!!) Let’s seize that time that’s slipping through your fingers at a new weekly “MomBoss time” led by former Summitt mom and current professional home organizer, Ryan Lanier. You deserve to get more done when the kids are in school, so bring a big tote, laundry basket, bag, or whatever you have that will cart your papers, mail, forms, school papers, coupons, lists, ETC, and start laying your hands on PROGRESS for you!

Astro Kids after school program
Astro Kids Gym has an after school program from 2:30-5:30 p.m. (extended hours available). Transportation is available. For more information, click here.

Yoga at Summitt
The Little Yoga House will offer after school yoga for K-5th grades on Tuesdays, beginning on Sept. 25, from 3-3:40 pm. Registration and information is here.
