Library News
Library Inventory
Each year I am tasked with doing an inventory of the library collection. This involves me scanning each and every Summitt item ID on every book, video, and/or piece of equipment.  The past two summers I have had the help of the wonderful Covenant Go Sunday! volunteers.  We have done the 2 week long task over one week in the summer. Unfortunately, with the construction around campus this summer, I was unable to get into the library, and need to do the task now.

Since the library will already be closed to regular services due to Book Fair, I thought I’d seize this opportunity. So, beginning, Monday, Nov. 9, I am looking for volunteers who can donate any amount of time to help scan library items. It is very easy, albeit boring. You can listen to your favorite podcasts while you work, or zen out to the beep-beep of the scanner. If you are interested, please sign up via Volunteer Spot: http://vols.pt/McuasH

Middle School Information
We have started to receive communication from Murchison and the magnet schools about preparations for next year’s 6th graders.

November 2- Murchison, Fulmore, Kealing, Gus Garcia and Ann Richards will be presenting information from 8:40–10:20 am to 5th grade students. Parents are invited to come as well and hear each school make a brief 20 minute presentation about their campus. Lamar does not travel to schools so if you are interested in that program, you will need to make arrangements to attend events at their campus (dates are on the blue information sheet that was sent out recently).

November 3-  Parent Info Night at Fulmore 6-7pm

November 23-  Murchison Middle School Showcase- all 5th grade students will travel by bus to MMS and will visit from 9:30-10:45am.

***A blue information sheet was just sent home that has the important dates and deadlines for the magnet schools.

College Shirt Day Every Monday– To promote college and career readiness, we are inviting students to join Summitt staff in wearing college t-shirts on Mondays. It is really fun to see all the colleges that staff and students wear and to start conversations about them.

Attendance Incentives–  We will be starting the attendance incentive program in November. Please make sure your student is at school and on time. The focus this month will be on tardies. The winning class will be announced at the end of the month and will receive a special prize! Every class is eligible to win an attendance award each month. We understand that children need to be home when they are ill, but we encourage you to schedule appointments outside of the school day as much as possible.

SEL– The SEL skills we have been working on include: being assertive, identifying feelings, respecting differences, understanding complex feelings, and taking others’ perspectives.

Guidance Curriculum– Classroom guidance is under way.  Kinder has been using I Care Cat to reinforce classroom rules. First Grade has been talking about big problems vs. little problems using Kelso. Second grade has been working on communication skills and being good listeners. And 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade did a really fun team building challenge involving stacking cups. They had to use good communication skills and work cooperatively to complete a series of difficult challenges together.

5th Grade Red Ribbon Week Presentation– Last week the District Attorney’s office sent a presenter who provided a brief 20 minute presentation to all 5th grade classes about drugs and alcohol. The presentation was very basic and each student received a pamphlet and a handout from them. They also provided our campus with 900 ribbons for Red Ribbon Week this week.

Mix It Up Day– As part of our No Place For Hate campaign, students mixed with another class at their grade level on Tuesday October 27 (National Mix It Up Day). Each class was assigned a partner class to do a 20 minute ice breaker activity with. Most English only classrooms were paired with a Vietnamese classroom to give our students a chance to mix and mingle with other students that they do not frequently get a chance to interact with.

Welcoming Schools– There will be a parent information meeting about our new Welcoming Schools initiative at the PTA general meeting at 6:30 pm on November 9.
