Boosterthon Fun Run next week
We have a brand new fundraiser this year and it reaches beyond the immediate Summitt family. This year’s main fundraiser is the Summitt Fun Run! It’ll be a 9-day program where we kick off with a Pep Rally on Tuesday, April 12, 2016. Families and friends will have time to get pledges for every lap your student runs, and then we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on Thursday, April 21, 2016.
With our big goal to raise funds for tutoring, technology and field trips, we asked the Fun Run experts at Boosterthon to power our Fun Run and make it more profitable, easier, and fun. Students will also experience an amazing character theme, Big World Recess! It’s a global fitness theme all about playing with character. Donations will go toward tutoring, technology and field trips and to the entire 9-day experience. So please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run! Thank you for your support! Austin ISD Survey
The facility planning consultant, Brailsford & Dunlavey (B&D), is releasing a survey to determine the best methods to engage Austinites in the facility and bond planning processes. The consultant worked with the Departments of Facilities, Communication and Community Engagement, and Research and Evaluation to develop and refine the survey. Also, we received assistance from Summitt Elementary School to ensure that the Vietnamese translation was correct. Results of the survey will help inform the draft community engagement plan that will be presented to the FABPAC for its consideration on April 14 meeting.
In addition to an English version, the survey can be taken in Spanish and Vietnamese. Also, the survey has been designed (optimized) to be taken on smartphones, other mobile devices, and computers.

The adolescent years are hard to navigate in general, especially when a teen has experienced a significant loss. Adolescents grieve differently than young children and adults – it can be so difficult to get them to express their thoughts or feelings about the loss, which is why we need specific tools and techniques to meet them where they are at. This workshop will provide you with hands-on skills to be able to better understand, support, and process grief with adolescents and their families.
Learning Objectives:
Participants who attend the workshop will be able to:
1) Develop an understanding of how adolescents understand and explore their grief developmentally
2) Gain an understanding of how social media influences the adolescent grief process
3) Address spirituality needs/concerns with grieving teens and adolescents
4) Take away concrete clinical tools and exercises to use with adolescent clients specific to processing their grief
5) Work with parents and family systems of the grieving adolescent to better support and navigate the needs and boundaries of each person in the family

Join us for an afternoon of enlightenment and learning with Rachel Saffer, LMSW & Katie Tarvin, Graduate Social Work Student. There a lot of myths and false assumptions about how young children grieve, or what they need during times of grief. Many believe that children are so naturally resilient that they will be able to adapt to a significant loss fairly easily. Others worry about any and every expression, behavior, or mannerism that a child may or may not be doing and whether that is “okay” or “normal” as they’re grieving. This presentation will provide you with explanations about how children understand grief and death loss developmentally, what they need from their home and school environments to adapt as well as possible to the loss, and give you take away tools and exercises to use with young children to help them explore their loss in healthy, appropriate ways. Drinks will be provided. Please bring your own sack lunch.
