Meetings for proposed Magnet school
Currently, a magnet program does not exist in the south Austin high schools including, Akins, Austin, Bowie, Crockett, and Travis. District data demonstrates that a large portion of the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) student applicants and enrollees are of the southwest AISD community. LASA’s current location at LBJ High School has reached capacity.
Community members have the opportunity to review the program proposals and are asked to complete a survey to further inform the committee’s work. The public will have multiple opportunities to share perspectives with the committee, tasked with establishing magnet program visions and curriculum/instruction needs for a potential new south magnet program.
The meetings are come-and-go meetings, allowing community members to arrive at any time during the meeting and stay as long as they would like. The meeting format will ensure all attendees receive the same information regardless of arrival time.
* A community session is slated for 4 to 7 p.m.Thursday, April 28 at the Mendez Middle School cafeteria. Community members will have the opportunity to review the program proposals and will asked to complete surveys to further inform the committee’s work.

Join us for an afternoon of enlightenment and learning with Rachel Saffer, LMSW & Katie Tarvin, Graduate Social Work Student.
There a lot of myths and false assumptions about how young children grieve, or what they need during times of grief. Many believe that children are so naturally resilient that they will be able to adapt to a significant loss fairly easily. Others worry about any and every expression, behavior, or mannerism that a child may or may not be doing and whether that is “okay” or “normal” as they’re grieving. This presentation will provide you with explanations about how children understand grief and death loss developmentally, what they need from their home and school environments to adapt as well as possible to the loss, and give you take away tools and exercises to use with young children to help them explore their loss in healthy, appropriate ways. Drinks will be provided. Please bring your own sack lunch.
