Boosterthon Fun Run on Thursday!
Come out and cheer on the students at the Fun Run on Thursday, April 21. We will have a Glow Run indoors because of the weather. Here’s the updated schedule:

Kinder:  8-9 am

1st: 9-10 am

2nd: 10-11 am

5th: 11 am – noon

PK:  12-12:30 pm

3rd: 12:30-1:30 pm

4th: 1:30-2:30 pm

You still have time to get pledges! We have pledges from at least 20 states and 4 other countries! We’ve reached more than halfway to our goal, so ask your friends and family to support Summitt. A portion of the money raised will help fund math and reading tutors, something that parents have been asking for a long time. Here’s how you can support Summitt Elementary:

•          Register your student. To log in pledges, please register your child on funrun.com, using our school’s registration code: 689-679. Students receive a FREE GIFT just by having their parent or guardian register them on funrun.com.

•          Reach out to people who can be sponsors. Connect with 10 people who can be your child’s sponsors. You can use social media in the pledging process and even create custom videos—all of this is on funrun.com. Be sure to capture and record each sponsor’s e-mail address. They will also have an easy opportunity to pay for your student’s pledge by credit card online.

Boosterthon payment volunteers needed
We need volunteers to help count and enter information after Boosterthon Fun Run ends. We will need volunteers to enter cash and check payments into Boosterthon’s online system for individual students on Thursday, April 28 and Friday, May 6. We need help from 9:30am – 1:30pm on Thursday, April 28th and 8am-10am on Friday, May 6th. It would be best if you can stay the entire time. However, we will gladly accept any volunteers we have for any amount of time. Sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4facac22a0fc1-boosterthon

AISD AND COMMUNITY NEWS

Meetings for proposed Magnet school
Currently, a magnet program does not exist in the south Austin high schools including, Akins, Austin, Bowie, Crockett, and Travis. District data demonstrates that a large portion of the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) student applicants and enrollees are of the southwest AISD community. LASA’s current location at LBJ High School has reached capacity.

Community members have the opportunity to review the program proposals and are asked to complete a survey to further inform the committee’s work. The public will have multiple opportunities to share perspectives with the committee, tasked with establishing magnet program visions and curriculum/instruction needs for a potential new south magnet program.

The meetings are come-and-go meetings, allowing community members to arrive at any time during the meeting and stay as long as they would like. The meeting format will ensure all attendees receive the same information regardless of arrival time.

* A community session is slated for 4 to 7 p.m. April 28 at the Mendez Middle School cafeteria. Community members will have the opportunity to review the program proposals and will asked to complete surveys to further inform the committee’s work.

1.5 CEUs Included for LPC, LMFT & Social Work Licensing Boards

Join us for an afternoon of enlightenment and learning with Rachel Saffer, LMSW & Katie Tarvin, Graduate Social Work Student. There a lot of myths and false assumptions about how young children grieve, or what they need during times of grief. Many believe that children are so naturally resilient that they will be able to adapt to a significant loss fairly easily. Others worry about any and every expression, behavior, or mannerism that a child may or may not be doing and whether that is “okay” or “normal” as they’re grieving. This presentation will provide you with explanations about how children understand grief and death loss developmentally, what they need from their home and school environments to adapt as well as possible to the loss, and give you take away tools and exercises to use with young children to help them explore their loss in healthy, appropriate ways. Drinks will be provided. Please bring your own sack lunch.
