Koblenz Movie Night on Friday
Come join the fun at Summitt Movie Night on Friday, October 5. We will be showing “Paddington 2” and “Ferdinand” in the cafeteria and the Great Hall. A ticket will get you a snack pack with popcorn, a sweet, and a drink. Bring a blanket or a chair if you’d like. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movies start around 7 p.m.
The week of Summitt Movie Night: Wednesday through Friday tickets will be on sale before school in the car line (for exact change or check) and after school in the Great Hall for $5. Tickets at the door will be $6. You may also purchase tickets by filling out the purchase tab at the bottom of the movie flyer and return it to your child’s teacher along with your check or cash payment. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Proceeds will benefit the Koblenz Exchange Program.
Skate Night next week
It’s time for the Summitt Fall Skate Night! Put on your favorite skate outfit and join us at Playland Skate Center (8822 McCann Dr, Austin, TX 78757) on Friday, October 12th from 6-9pm. The cost is $9. Tell them you’re with Summitt and a portion of your entry will be donated to Summitt PTA.
Extra Teacher Workroom Help Needed
For the next few weeks, we are short one of our top volunteers in the Teacher Workroom. We have several requests for copies, laminating, and other projects. Your help would significantly help our teacher workload. The Teacher Workroom is open from 7:10am until 4pm. Please come volunteer!
Koblenz informational meeting
Would you like to know more about our teacher & student exchange program with Schenkendorf Elementary in Koblenz, Germany? Please join us on Thursday, October 4th at 5:30 pm in the Summitt library. This year our friends from Koblenz will be visiting us sometime in April. We will travel to Germany the following year in June 2020. See what the program is all about and how you can get involved.
Collect Box Tops
Please help Summitt continue to earn money by collecting your Box Tops! Next week’s Monday folders will include a Box Tops collection sheet. For every collection sheet turned in, your student will earn a small prize. Extra collection sheets and a bin can be found on the Community Table in the Great Hall. Thank you to everyone who trimmed and turned in Box Tops last year!!
Need small toy donations
Prizes=Fun! Eagle Fest is in need of small, unopened toys from restaurants like McDonalds, Chick Fil’A, Wendy’s, and Arby’s. We are also running low on larger “prize booth toys” (sport balls, craft kits, cool trinkets, etc.) in new or gently-used condition. A toy donation box will be set in the Great Hall near the Summitt Office. Thank you!
Upcoming wellness dates
Tuesday-Thursday, October 16-18 – Vision and Hearing Screening (Pre-K, Kindergarten and 5th Grade). Please consider volunteering to help retrieve classes for this. Contact Shana Pokorny in the front office ([email protected]) with questions.
Thursday, October 25 – Student Flu Shots. There will be information coming soon about signing up for flu shots. There have been more than 10 cases of the flu at Summitt this year. They will also need volunteers to help that day.
Custodian Appreciation Week
Austin ISD proudly recognizes Custodian Appreciation Week, October 1-5. From spotless floors to bathroom cleanliness, Summitt custodial staff work hard to keep our facilities clean and safe. Day in and day out, they arrive early and stay late to make sure that Summitt is a great place to learn, teach and work. They are a crucial part of our family. The next time you are on campus, let them know how much you appreciate their hard work!
Food Service Workers and Lunchroom Monitors Appreciation Week
We’re not trying to be cheesy when we say that Summitt’s cafeteria staff is a slice above the rest! Ours are nacho average food service workers. And we’d all go bananas if it weren’t for our lunchroom monitors. They are truly Life Savers! So, please remember our cafeteria staff and all the work they do for our students by saying thank you to them in commemoration of Food Service Workers and Lunchroom Monitors Appreciation Week, October 8-12!!

This section features volunteer opportunities with specific time estimates. Check here each week to see what’s needed. That way, if you “got the time,” you can help out regularly for 5 to 15 minutes, or for a couple hours on a one-time project.

Fifth Grade news
Believe it or not, it is already time to start talking about transitioning to middle school next year. We will be trying to update our newsletter as dates become available or change. Dates are subject to change so it is always wise to check the middle school website about events that will be held on their campus. We have the following dates already scheduled:
October 19- 8-10 am Murchison and magnet school (Keeling, Fulmore, Ann Richards) presentations. Parents are welcome to attend. Each school will do a short presentation to 5th grade about their school. This event will be held at Summitt in the 5th grade commons.
January 11- 5th grade showcase at Murchison. Fifth grade students will travel by bus to MMS. They will rotate through introductory presentations about the campus and it’s programs. Students will be gone from about 9-12 am. Parents are welcome to attend but will need to provide their own transportation.
January 24- Course selection presentation at Summitt. Murchison counselors will come to Summitt to present choice sheets to 5th graders and to talk about course descriptions. Fifth graders should bring their choice sheets home for parents to view on this day.
February 5- Choice sheet night at Murchison. This is an opportunity for parents and students to go and see the school and ask questions about elective choices. Foreign languages, Band, Theater Arts, Art, Choir, Technology classes, etc. will have tables set up with staff to answer questions to help you make decisions.
February 8- Choice sheets will be due to Mrs. Cardosa at Summitt. If you do not submit a choice sheet, Mrs. Cardosa will have to meet with the student to make choice sheet selections so that the student will have classes at the beginning of the year.

Every year you need to join to get access to these discounts. Join at Summitt’s online store OR pick up an application in the Great Hall and turn it in at the office.
GT Nominations
The Fall GT nomination window has opened! Beginning, Monday, Sept. 10 and running until Friday, Sept. 28, parents and teachers can nominate 3rd-5th graders to be screened for the Gifted and Talented program. Grades K-2 will be in the Spring. Forms in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Arabic can be found online at: https://www.austinisd.org/advancedacademics/gifted. Please note that parents must complete both the Parent GT Nomination Form (grades K-5 only) and the Gifted Characteristics Checklist for Parents. Also, for any questions and to understand the program, please come to a general GT information meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 6:30 -7:30pm in the library.

Austin Radio Control Association will host its 4th annual Electric RC Air Show on Saturday, Oct. 6, 10 am-4pm, at 8705 Lindell Lane. More info here.
Shredding day
Support the Anderson Wrestling Team and have your personal and business documents SECURELY shredded by Balcones Shred on Sunday, October 14, 2-4pm, Anderson High School Parking Lot. Your confidential and old documents will be destroyed onsite. Donations will benefit the AHS Wrestling Team. See the flyer for more information.
TROJAN PINK OUT
Anderson High School is excited to announce this year’s TROJAN PINK OUT calendar of events. We are counting on you, our vertical team families, friends and fans, to help us turn Anderson’s stands and audiences PINK this October. Trojan Pink Out events are intended to raise Breast Cancer Awareness at Anderson and in our greater community. Education, early detection and timely treatment of this terrible disease are all critical steps in the fight to save lives. In recent years, too many amazing women in our community have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and we are blessed to count many of them as courageous fighters, close friends and SURVIVORS.
TROJAN PINK OUT t-shirts will be sold for $10 (cash or check, made payable to Komen Austin) at the Anderson Spirit Store through the end of October. Organizing sessions
We know you’re out there, busy moms! Do you have a to-do list that just gets longer even though you’re TRYING!?! (PS It’s NOT your fault!!) Let’s seize that time that’s slipping through your fingers at a new weekly “MomBoss time” being held locally by former Summitt mom and current professional home organizer, Ryan Lanier. Austin Child Guidance Center Group sessions
Behavioral Parent Training: Managing Difficult and Noncompliant Behaviors
This 8-week group is for English speaking caregivers of children 5-12 years old. This group will help caregivers of children with difficult to manage behaviors including noncompliance, ADHD- attention and hyperactivity issues, and disruptive behaviors. Caregivers will learn how to understand their children’s misbehavior, increase compliance, and decrease disruptive behavior. It meets every Monday, beginning Sept. 24, from 6-7:30 pm. Cost is $10 per session/per couple. More info in this flyer.
Social Skills and Friendship Group
This 8 week group will work with children who are 7-9 years old. This group will work with kids to learn about body language, communication, and socially appropriate interactions. It meet every Wednesday, beginning Sept. 26, from 6-7:30 pm. Cost is on a sliding scale fee. More info in this flyer.
Astro Kids after school program
Astro Kids Gym has an after school program from 2:30-5:30 p.m. (extended hours available). Transportation is available. For more information, click here.
EAGLE FEST 2018 NEWS
Bring your family and friends to enjoy the wonderful carnival atmosphere, play games, and raise money for our school! Eagle Fest is our largest-attended PTA fundraiser and 100% of the proceeds go directly to our Summitt students!
Summitt Elementary’s Eagle Fest 2018
When: October 20, 2018, 3pm-6pm
Where: Summitt Elementary basketball court and playground
Who wants to wait in line? Save yourself and your family some time and buy your Eagle Fest tickets through the Summitt online store or use the order form that was included in your students Monday folders this week. Tickets will be sold in the Summitt online store until Wednesday the 17th. All tickets purchased online will be sent home in your child’s homeroom folder by Thursday the 18th. https://summitteagles.org/store/
Tickets can be purchased in bundles of 10 for $5.00. That’s only 50 cents a ticket! Approximately 20 tickets will allow a child to play each token-winning game at Eagle Fest once. An additional 20 tickets will allow a child to do every single game/booth/attraction. Hotdogs, cotton candy and popcorn will be available for purchase via tickets. About 20 tickets will feed a family of 4 a hotdog dinner.
Tickets will still be sold during Eagle Fest at the ticket booth – cash, check, and credit accepted.
Eagle Fest Booth Volunteer Sign-Up
Eagle Fest runs on the willingness of each classroom to staff a booth. We ask every family to volunteer 30 minutes of their time to staff their child’s classroom booth. We’ve made it easy on you this year – all signups will be done on Sign Up Genius (no registration required). In addition, every year we ask our wonderful Summitt families to help us out with food and drink donations. We sell the drinks and chips in the Food Court and use the candy, Pringles, and 2 Liter soda bottles as prizes. Signs have been set up along the wall in the Great Hall across from the office showing where to drop off your donations.
