| Eagle Fest is this weekend! Eagle Fest is this Saturday from 3-6 pm – and we need your help! Here are a number of ways you can help pitch in to make this annual event a success: Each grade level is asked to donate items. Check this list to see what your child’s grade has been assigned. We are specifically in dire need of cans of Pringles, two liter sodas, and silly string. We are behind our targets and would appreciate all families bringing in their assigned items! Eagle Fest is run by volunteer power. Sign up for volunteer shifts here. We need to borrow large coolers and pop-up tents (labeled with your name) for the event. Reach out to Sarah at [email protected] for more information. Tickets! You can purchase tickets online at the Eagle Store – or before school starts and during afternoon pick-up. We take checks, cash, and credit cards. Approximately 20 tickets will allow a child to play each token-winning game at Eagle Fest once. Hotdogs, drinks, and popcorn will be available for purchase via tickets. Approximately 20 tickets will feed a family of 4 a hotdog dinner. Campus Beautification Day Campus Beautification Day is this Sunday, October 20, starting at 9 am. Please consider joining your Summitt community for a few hours of campus beautification. Volunteers should bring sunscreen, water, garden tools, and gloves. Food Service Workers and Lunchroom Monitors Appreciation This Week Summitt’s cafeteria staff are a “slice above the rest”! Thank you, Veronica Macedo, Anela Terant Rodriguez, Jennifer Schuermann, and Albina Wilson for your hard work in preparing healthy meals for our students. And we’d all “go bananas” if it weren’t for our lunchroom monitors. Thank you, Maggie Strong and Bryan Gauthier for managing the lunchroom and helping Summitt students! Please thank them for their hard work and dedication. Fall Pictures Picture packages are coming home this week, so be sure to check your child’s backpack! If you haven’t ordered, it’s not too late. We’re sending home slips printed with your child’s picture and order code, so you can still order online. If you need to contact Inter State Studio with questions about the pictures you received, visit Inter-State.com/support. Picture retakes will be Wednesday, November 13. Red Ribbon Week October 21-25 During Red Ribbon Week, we will be helping our students to make a commitment not to use drugs or alcohol. Each student will receive a red bracelet to wear for the week that symbolizes their commitment to say no to drugs and alcohol. To help make this week fun, we will be celebrating our commitments with the following dress-up days. Monday: SOCK IT TO DRUGS – Students wear crazy socks. Tuesday: TEAM UP AGAINST DRUGS – Students wear a college or team shirt of any kind (NFL, NBA, soccer, little league, etc.) Wednesday: WEAR ORANGE AND PUT A CAP ON DRUGS – Students wear anything orange to support National Unity Day. This supports our anti-bullying and No Place for Hate initiatives. Students can also wear a hat or cap on this day. Thursday: OUR FUTURE IS SO BRIGHT W/OUT DRUGS – Students wear sunglasses and NEON colors on this day. Friday: WEAR RED DAY – Students wear anything red to show support for saying NO to drugs. Halloween Book Character Dressup Day: October 31 This annual event will not be part of Red Ribbon Week as in some years past. To celebrate Halloween, have your student dress up as their favorite book character. Please do NOT bring masks, props, or accessories for student safety reasons. Tuesday, October 22: Mother Goose LIVE for Pre-k-1st grades Wednesday, October 23: Molly Brooks is coming to Summitt to visit 3rd and 4th grades! Not sure who Molly Brooks is? Molly Brooks is the author/illustrator of the graphic novel Sanity and Tallulah. She’ll be at Summitt Elementary on Wednesday, October 23, to talk about her latest graphic novel, the second installment in the Sanity and Tallulah series. Purchase your copy using this order form. Parents are welcome to attend! Monday, October 28: Pumpkin Decorating Contest begins – please see this attachment for more details! Pumpkins due Monday the 28th. Viewing and voting will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Winners will be announced on Halloween! Book Swap: Read anything good lately? Or, maybe you’re looking for something to break your reading dry spell? Come by the library where we’ve installed a new book and magazine swap station. Located by the Eagles’ Nest, the Summitt Book Swap has books and magazines for kids and adults. | PTA Fall Grant Program Announces Approved Grants Summitt PTA is happy to announce that we were able to fund the following Teacher/staff/school/community needs during our Fall 2019 Grant Program: 1) New PE safety mats; 2) Additional furniture for the new counseling center; 3) Two needs-based food/clothing/supply programs; 4) Life Skills community-based instruction; 5) Rebuilding the oak tree benches; 6) a school-wide science curriculum; 7) additional supplies for non-classroom teachers; and 8) First Grade reading manipulatives. Thank you all who submitted grant requests and thank you to the PTA grant committee. Campus Advisory Council (CAC) The CAC currently needs two more parent representatives to serve on our Campus Advisory Council. This is another great way to remain connected to Summitt and our campus progress. If you are interested in serving on CAC, please email Principal Friede directly! Teacher Workroom Help Needed If you have 10-15 minutes to spare, the Teacher Workroom could use some help next week. Teachers need help with copying, die cutting, and laminating. Hours are 7:10 am-3:30 pm. Come when you can! |

| It’s My Park Day – November 2 It’s My Park Day Fall 2019 will be Saturday, November 2 – please consider coming out to help with Balcones Park maintenance and beautification. It’s also a great way to get to know neighbors and explore the park and greenbelt! You can sign up here: Balcones Park Cleanup and Trail Work. Austin ISD Central Texas Dyslexia Conference 2019 Please join us for the “Your Story is Your Strength”—Austin ISD Central Texas Dyslexia Conference 2019 on Saturday, October 19 from 9 am-3 pm at the AISD Performing Arts Center at 1500 Barbara Jordan Blvd. The Central Texas Dyslexia Conference is held each year in October, which is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Each year the event brings together parents, teachers, advocates, tutors, administrators and community leaders to learn how to best support the academic and emotional needs of students with dyslexia. The conference is free to attend and is made possible by dedicated volunteers and financial contributions from the community. Austin ISD has been organizing the conference since 2015 and provides dyslexia training and evaluations year round for AISD students. This support includes training reading specialists to be certified academic language therapists and working toward a goal of staffing every elementary school campus with an ALT. For more information about the conference, including registration, speakers, sponsorship and donation opportunities, please visit the conference website. Registration is free and now open. The Fitness School We are excited to bring The Fitness School to Summitt Elementary! The Fitness School, AISD’s 2019-20 Partner of the Year, is bringing its After-School Enrichment Program to Summitt. The program converts time after school into productive, health-promoting activity. Based on the building blocks of fitness, we introduce all children regardless of age, competency level or current fitness level to a meaningful regime of fitness-building skills that will last a lifetime. Delivered on campus and after school with the assistance of interns from The University of Texas College of Education, Advanced Sciences, Kinesiology and Athletics Departments, The Fitness School provides our area kids a means to dissipate their restless energy and keep them active. This is our 4th year servicing Murchison Middle School and 3rd year at Hill Elementary and we couldn’t be any more excited to finally be at Summitt this year! The program meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday based on the AISD District Calendar. Students enrolling from Summitt will meet at the office at 3:00 pm and will be escorted outside by a Fit School employee for active play until class officially starts, 4:00 pm.
