Jingle Bell Jog on Friday
This Friday, December 1st is our 11th annual Jingle Bell Jog for 4th and 5th grade students! All students in 4th and 5th grade will come to the gym for their Specials on Friday. Parents are welcome to come out and cheer on the students.
4th grade will run from 1:05-1:50 pm
5th grade will run from 1:55-2:40 pm
We will all warm up in the gym and review the route for the first 10 minutes, run the race, and then hand out the jingle bell awards back in the gym the last 5-10 minutes of specials.
Teachers: All classes are welcome to come out and cheer! Lining the fire lane on the side closest to the school would be the best spot as the students run past that area at the end of each lap! If you have recess during these times, please make sure your students are aware that this race is taking place. It looks like perfect weather for our Jingle Bell Jog this year!
Holiday Market next week
Summitt is hosting its seventh annual “Holiday Market” craft and vendor event on Friday, Dec. 8, 6-9 pm. This is a great opportunity to find unique gifts for the holidays. Original Works Art Fundraiser deadline extended!
Did you miss the Original Works artwork fundraiser deadline but still want to order products? Our online gallery will be open until midnight this Sunday, December 3rd. Artwork ordered between now and December 3rd will arrive at the school by December 18th and go home with your child that day.

Message from Principal Standish
Parents/Guardians, if your student(s) attend Summitt on a transfer, please remember that you signed a ‘Request for Student Transfer’ form agreeing to “assume responsibility for satisfactory attendance (includes tardies), discipline, achievement of your student(s) and cooperation with the school staff whiles at the transfer school. When these responsibilities are not met, the transfer will be revoked. If revoked, the student(s) may not at any later time request a transfer back to the school.”
Technology Update: Hour of Code
Parents, please consider joining your child for an exciting technology event in the Computer Lab at Summitt. We will be participating in our 5th Annual Hour of Code. This is a very fun event! No coding experience needed. We all learn together.
We live in a world surrounded by technology. Whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of our students are studying computer science. That’s why Summitt Elementary is joining in the largest learning event in history- The Hour of Code.
All Kinder – 5th grade students will attend this event during their regular Lab lesson time. Pre K will have devices to use in their classroom to participate. Tours at Summitt
For those who may be new to the area or considering school choices, Summitt will be offering school tours on the 1st Thursday and the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 9 am and 1 pm. Please contact Shana Pokorny (512) 414-4484, in the office if you need more information.
Girls on the Run Bake Sale
The Summitt Girls on the Run will be holding a bake sale after school on Monday, December 4, as our Community Impact Project. Proceeds from the bake sale will benefit Caritas Austin. All items at the bake sale will be one dollar. Come get a treat to start your week and help support a great cause!
Chick-Fil-A Family Night
Summitt Family Night at Chick-fil-A is on Wednesday, December 13th, 5-9 pm, at the Parmer and Mopac location. Come out and have a meal with your friends and support the Summitt PTA. Make sure to tell your server that you’re with Summitt and a portion of the sales will go back to serving our school. Valid for dine in or drive through.
Spring Fling Save the Date and Update
This year’s Spring Fling will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at the Red Oak Ballroom on Anderson Lane. Spring Fling is Summitt’s adult only silent auction fundraiser, so please put it on your calendar and start booking your babysitters for a fun parents’ night out with your Summitt friends.
Planning for Spring Fling is gearing up and we need your help. We are looking for volunteers for the following committees:
+Donation Request Committee (Beginning in Jan) – solicit donations from businesses and restaurants using provided leads (much of this can be done online and via email and many of them are asking repeat donors to match their previous donations.)
+ Event Committee – help with decorations, set up, raffle tickets, coordinating with chair for other event related needs

We are looking forward to our 3rd meeting this year to be held, Monday, December 11, in the library from 3:05 – 4:30 pm. We will break up into mixed age teams to be play Jeopardy as well as have a holiday book exchange. Notes from the Nurse
Please read this letter from the nurse regarding medicine at school. Only those medications that are medically necessary during school hours for a student’s attendance or written in an IEP should be sent to school.
Can Contest
It’s time for the Fall Can Contest! Which class will win the trophy and an ice cream party? Please bring your empty aluminum cans in a bag to school. They can be dropped off behind the trailer next to the basketball court. Entrance slips can be found on the table in the Great Hall or in the office. The contest runs until Nov. 30. If you or someone you know has time any day from November 28 through December 19 to discuss with our technology classes the importance of learning to code and studying Computer Science, please contact our technology teacher, Barbara Neill ([email protected]). You do not have to be a programmer. You may choose to do a 5-minute presentation to the class, or just talk about job ideas and the need to understand our changing technological world. You can come during your child’s lab time or another day/time that is convenient for you.
Multicultural Night 2018

Third Grade Still Needs Pringles Cans!

Water Bottle and Wipe Collection
Brownie Troop 2028 is collecting new reusable water bottles and unopened packages of wipes. The collection ends on November 30th, 2017. We are collecting these water bottles and wipes for kids that don’t have permanent homes. All donations are going to The Center for Child Protection. We set a goal for a hundred water bottles and wipes. The box for donations is in the Summitt Great Hall. More info is here.

The Anderson Girls’ Basketball Team begins a fundraiser runs until Dec. 1 to help you celebrate the season! Chicken, pork, or bean and cheese tamales will be sold for $15 per dozen. Parent Education Series at Murchison
The topic is Talking With Our Kids About Diversity and Equity on Thursday, Dec. 7th from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Murchison Cafeteria. Connect with other parents and learn how we can communicate, listen, and learn about diversity and equity. Learn how we can help our kids do better today and help them understand the messages they are receiving. Dr. Richard Reddick and Ms. Khotan Shahbazi-Harmon will be sharing information to help parents make sense of today’s environment and facilitating a dialog building upon our close-knit community. Both participated in Mayor Adler’s Task Force on Institutional Racism and Systemic Inequities led by Dr. Paul Cruz and Dr. Collette Pierce Burnette.

MathLeague competition
Mathleague.org, the largest network of local and state math competitions at the elementary, middle and high school levels in the country, is teaming up with the Church of Christ in Hyde Park to conduct an elementary competition for third through sixth graders from 8 am to approximately 1 pm on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at the Church of Christ in Hyde Park, Austin, TX. Last year, over 20,000 students participated in these contests, and they had a great time doing math problems and meeting their peers from other schools. The contests also provide an excellent opportunity for coaches from the various schools to discuss strategies and teaching techniques. Over 250 schools in the Austin area have been invited. Parent help series video
Just about 5 minutes is all it takes to view one of the Parent Education Mini-videos in the AHS PTSA parent help series. These minis feature interviews with and information gathered from experts in their respective fields with topics ranging from positive use of social media to how to prepare your senior student for college away from home. Videos are geared towards parents of high school aged children with the hope they will help parents keep the lines of communication open with their students.
