Book Fair Continues
Our annual Fall Book Fair continues this week until Friday at noon. And don’t forget Family Night on Thursday! NEW this year is the eWallet, which provides students a secure, cash-free way to shop the fair. There is no charge to set up an eWallet. Parents simply create an account and authorize a spending limit on their credit card. All unused balances are returned to the credit card automatically after the fair is closed on December 2. Go to the Scholastic homepage for Summitt Elementary to set up your eWallet! Teaching Assistants Appreciation This Week
This week, Summitt proudly recognizes our wonderful Teaching Assistants. Give a special thanks to Carmen DeHart, Thanh Doan, Sarwat Rahman, Sarah Spence, Tori Tambila, Brenda Wood, and Mizu Wa’oo for providing much-need support to our classrooms. Thank you for helping us to acknowledge these hardworking individuals.

Please join us for the December PTA General Meeting. We will host a parent panel on AISD Middle School Choices. Parents of current and former students at Ann Richards, Kealing, Lamar, and Murchison Middle Schools will take questions about their students’ experiences at these schools. This is open to all Summitt families. (If you know of a family with a student at either Gus Garcia or Lively, we would love to have them participate as well – email [email protected])

Holiday Shopping Market – Taking Vendors Now
Summitt is hosting its seventh annual Holiday Market craft and vendor event. The Market will be in the Summitt Great Hall on Friday, December 6 from 6-9 pm. Booth space is only $25 if paid before November 29 and $35 after November 29. We will also have a silent auction. All proceeds benefit the Summitt-Koblenz Exchange program. We will advertise the event on the marquee, in the school email newsletter, in the local newspaper, and with the neighborhood association.

PTA Fall Grant Program Announces Approved Grants
Summitt PTA is happy to announce that we were able to fund the following Teacher/staff/school/community needs during our Fall 2019 Grant Program: (1) New PE safety mats, (2) Additional furniture for the new counseling center, (3) Two needs-based food/clothing/supply programs, (4) Life Skills community-based instruction, (5) Rebuilding the oak tree benches, (6) a school-wide science curriculum, (7) additional supplies for non-classroom teachers, and (8) First Grade reading manipulatives. Thank you all who submitted grant requests, and thank you to the PTA grant committee.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Teacher Workroom Help Needed
If you have 10-15 minutes to spare, the Teacher Workroom could use some help next week. Teachers need help with copying, die cutting, and laminating. Hours are 7:10 am-3:30 pm. We specifically need help with the following projects: 2nd Grade Holiday Mittens: Please help ensure the 2nd graders have a wonderful holiday by volunteering to cut out large mittens with cuffs and put them together. You can do this at the school or home. We need 140 mittens completed by 12/5.  3rd Grade Holiday Stockings: Please help ensure the 3rd graders have a wonderful holiday by volunteering to cut out large stockings. You can do this at the school or home. We need 260 single pieces completed by 12/5.  If you can help, there are directions on the wall in the teachers workroom or contact Karen Reyna at [email protected]. Any help is greatly appreciated! Also, if you are the kind person that left a note in the work room about completing 100+ cuffs, can you please email Karen. Thanks so much for all your help.

Beautification Team in Need of a Few Hoses & Sprayers

Hygiene Drive – Last Week to Donate! 
Please help us create 100 Healthy Holiday Care Packages for clients at the nearby Covenant Food Pantry by donating a personal care item to our first-ever hygiene drive  To ensure that we collect a variety of items, we are suggesting a donation item for each grade. Please give one (or more) if you can. Deliver your donations to the labeled boxes in the Great Hall no later than Friday, November 22nd. Thank you! All grades – any spare plastic store bags you have Pre K – hand soap or hand sanitizer Kindergarten – Shampoo 1st Grade – Toothpaste 2nd Grade – Body wash or bath soap 3rd Grade – Toothbrushes 4th Grade – Conditioner 5th Grade – Deodorant Summitt Partnering with APD’s Operation Blue Santa
Summitt is collaborating with Austin Police Department’s Operation Blue Santa to collect toys for families in need during the holiday season. Boxes will be put in the main hallway from November 5 – December 17 for collection. Thank you for your generosity!

Parent’s Night Out
You deserve a night off! And you can get just that with the Anderson High School Parent’s Night Out brought to you by the Anderson Cheer & Mascot and Football team. More information and sign up below.

When: December 14, 2019 from 6:30 pm-10 pm
Cost: $45/child, grades pre-k through 6th (must be potty trained)
Where: Anderson High School Cafeteria To register for a night out with the cheer team, click here. Your child will make gifts for family, learn cheers, jumps, and stunts, make crafts, and more. To register for a night out with the football team, click here. It will feature gym and outdoor field games.

Webinar: How Charter Schools Impact Public Education with Patti Everitt
Due to high interest in the Charter Schools topic at our last PTA meeting, the original presenter, Patti Everitt, will deliver the same presentation virtually. The webinar is being offered by Austin Council PTA and AISD Parent Engagement Support office as a learning opportunity for PTA and school communities in Austin ISD. Patti Everitt is a consultant on state education policy with a focus on the impact of charter schools on public education. Most recently, she coordinated the legislative agenda to increase the transparency and efficiency of charter schools in Texas that was supported by 16 statewide education groups.  Patti has worked with foundations, school districts, and nonprofit organizations to develop innovative education, employment, and health programs for youth. Coats for Kids Distribution Day
Coats for Kids​, now in its 33rd year, is an annual community event that collects and distributes new and gently worn winter coats to eligible youth in Central Texas. Learn how to get a coat or give a coat via this English flyer and Spanish flyer. Distribution day is Saturday, December 7, 8 am-3 pm.

Chicness Nails Gives Back to Summitt
During the month of November, Chicness Nails at 4005 West Parmer Lane (next door to It’s a Grind) will contribute 15% of all sales from Summitt families and staff to Summitt PTA. Parent education at Murchison Middle School
Save this date for the following speaker in Murchison’s Parent Education series: Tuesday, December 3 – Sarah Kapostay: supporting our LGBTQ youth Night of the Robots
On the night of December 6, starting at 5:30 pm, Night of the Robots will occur in the Applied Technology Center at Anderson High School. If you are a first-timer, NotR is a night where parents can drop off their children at a mini robotics night camp where they learn about engineering and robotics. Parents can enjoy a night off from the kids, which is usually the long-overdue break that they need! The age group ranges from Kindergarten to 5th grade, and there are multiple stations in which the kids can explore possible new interests. Sign up here.

Austin ISD’s Middle School Fair
On Saturday, December 7, from 9 am-12 pm, families of current and future middle school students are invited to Austin ISD’s 2019 Middle School Fair. Students and their families can learn about the diverse and innovative programming offered in Austin ISD, enjoy student performances, and hear from current students, families and faculty from our 19 middle schools about the amazing programs and classes open to our middle school students. ACGC In Action: Behind the Scenes and What You Need to Know
Did you know that Austin Child Guidance Center has the only walk-in clinic for children in Central Texas? Or that in 2007 we still used typewriters? Join us for ACGC In Action where you’ll learn fun facts, details about our services, and ways to make a difference in a child’s life. Meet program leaders, see our work in action, and learn ways to get involved with Austin Child Guidance Center.

Austin Child Guidance Center’s Trauma Trainings
ACGC offers interactive, engaging and educational 1.5 hour trauma trainings that are tailored to the needs of various audiences, including professionals and parents. Trainings include information from the most current brain-based research on trauma and incorporate materials from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and National Child Traumatic Stress Network.

Trainings Include: Trauma-Informed Care (direct care staff, supervisors, administrators) Creating Trauma-Informed Systems of Care within Organizations (leadership, board, administrators)  Register here
