STAAR Test next week
Students will take the STAAR test next Monday-Wednesday. There will be a special STAAR-themed pep rally on Friday in place of Assembly. Please note that parents are not allowed on campus during STAAR testing due to confidentiality and security. Please schedule lunch with your student or schedule appointments for your child who is taking the test on another day. The library will also be closed these days. This is for all grade levels due to testing groups in rooms throughout the campus.
Monday, May 14 – 3rd and 4th grade STAAR testing, 5th grade retest
Tuesday, May 15 – 3rd and 4th grade STAAR testing, 5th grade retest
Wednesday, May 16 – 5th grade STAAR testing
Teacher Appreciation Week
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week! Please remember our classroom teachers, substitute teachers, special education teachers, foreign language, PPCD, Life Skills, Res/Inclusion, Speech, and Special Area (PE, art, music, technology) teachers for all the hard work they do. Our teachers inspire our students to achieve their greatest potential, and their influence continues long after the students’ days are memories. So stop to say “thank you” in the hall, send a card or note to school to tell them how much they mean to you and your child, or bring a treat to show your appreciation. They all deserve to be recognized for their important role in our school community.
Summitt Spirit Night with the Round Rock Express Friday
Join other Summitt families at the Dell Diamond to watch the Round Rock Express vs. New Orleans Baby Cakes baseball game on Friday, May 11, at 7 p.m. Lawn seats are $6, and reserved seats are $12. It will be STAR WARS NIGHT! Be ready to meet Anakin Skywalker, Princess Leia and witness a lightsaber battle. Don’t forget to stick around post-game for Friday Fireworks! Spring Fling update
Thank you to everyone who helped make Spring Fling a huge success. It was a great event and we raised a little over $18,000 for technology instruction at Summitt. Congratulations to our raffle winners: The Dole/Strippoli Family, The Fasel Family, and the Guitrau Family
We had 2 items that did not sell at the auction, so we are selling them first come first serve in the office.

School Health Team Appreciation Next Week

On Friday, May 18th the PTA will be providing a delicious Mediterranean lunch from Austin Halal. We need your help to fill out the meal! Summitt Community, I would first like to send out a HUGE “Thank You!” to our Spring Fling committee! What a wonderful evening! Thank you Lacey Lake and Jill Sutton, and so many parents who worked hard to bring this event together. This team has been working since early in the school year to gather donations, find and coordinate with a new venue, and pull our community together to show support for technology instruction at Summitt. I am always humbled by this event and your support. Also, I would like to thank all of the teachers, staff, and parents who either came out to the event or, from home, spent their Saturday evening participating in the NEW online bidding. Hopefully this system made it possible for anyone to participate that could not attend the event. Our Communications Team did a great job relaying information about the event and details needed for anyone wanting to participate in the online bidding. Thank you team! Thank you for your support.
Note from Multicultural committee
On Friday, April 27, Multicultural Night celebrated our diverse campus. We had about 15 different countries represented. Many parents brought a cultural dish, pastry, or other food to sample while some dressed in their traditional wear. Others shared their family background and things that reflected their culture. Our FLEX language teachers Ms. Cormack, Mrs. Loftus, Mr. Rohde, and Mr. Hargrave lead our students in a song, or presented in the language that they teach. We also had the Summitt Lion Dance team culminate our student performances. Everyone enjoyed the presentations, sampling cultural foods, and playing board games that originated in different countries, but are played in the United States today. Thank you to all who participated in putting this wonderful event together: Multicultural Commitee, staff, parents, and students. Thank you to those who were in attendance to celebrate the cultural diversity at Summitt Elementary! We hope to see you again next year and invite others to join us!
Donations and special volunteer help
Paper towel roll donations and rocket volunteers
Third Grade is looking for donations of gently-used paper towel rolls for our rocket project. We will leave a basket labeled in the Great Hall. We are also looking for any volunteers willing to help either at Summitt or at home in the making of rocket supplies such as fins and engine blocks.
Moving boxes and packing tape
Next school year, a majority of the teachers will move to a different classroom. (More info on where each grade will be located coming soon.) Our teachers will need to move everything from their classrooms. They will need moving boxes, boxes with lids, storage containers, packing tape, big markers for labeling, etc. Please leave them in the Great Hall. Also, talk to the teachers to see if they need help packing.
Lost and Found
Please take a look in the lost and found for your student’s possessions. It is full of coats, clothing, backpacks, lunch boxes and water bottles. The lost and found is located to the right of the front doors, in the music hallway, after you enter the building. All items not claimed by Thursday, May 30, 2018 will be donated.
Got the time?
This section features volunteer opportunities with specific time estimates. Check here each week to see what’s needed. That way, if you “got the time,” you can help out regularly for 5 to 15 minutes, or for a couple hours on a one-time project.

While most days we would love volunteers to open the door after the 7:45 am bell and at lunchtime, please be mindful that we cannot have visitors on campus next Monday (5/14), Tuesday (5/15), or Wednesday (5/16) due to STAAR testing.
GT Family Fun Night

Book Swap
The Summitt Elementary Library will host the 2nd Annual Summer Book Swap on Friday, May 25.
What’s a book swap?
A Book Swap is free event in which students can bring in a book that they have already read, and swap it for a book that another student has brought in. This is a great way to get a few more miles on some of those book fair books you bought back in the fall.
How do I participate?
Bring in up to 5 books any time before, Friday, May 25. Mrs. Richey will give you a Golden ticket for every book you bring for the swap. On Friday, May 25, Mrs. Richey will call students down to the library to cash in their tickets for a “new-to-you” book.
Who can participate?
Any Summitt elementary student, teacher, or parent
Can I bring ANYTHING?
Please bring in reading books only–no sticker, color, or work books–that are in decent condition.

We have collaborated with 1st Day School Supplies to help parents and teachers get the exact supplies needed for the school year without the hassle and aggravation of shopping at Wal-Mart, Target or HEB. This is convenient, easy and hassle free, plus the prices are competitive! So this summer as the temperature hits over 100 degrees and lines at the checkout counter are a mile long … make sure you have purchased school supplies from the comfort of your own home!
Follow Maestra Cormack on her travels
Maestra Cormack, the World Language Spanish Teacher for 1st grade, and Mr. Cormack, Austin ISD Casis Elementary teacher, were awarded a grant through Fund for Teachers to travel South America this summer. The Cormacks would love their students to experience their travels along with them this summer. It is easy to do! Visit their website and YouTube channel to see where they are, pictures, and videos of their experiences. The Cormacks will answer any questions from students during their travels via comments or by email. Their travel itinerary includes Argentina, Uruguay, Perú, Bolivia, Colombia, and Panamá (Central America). The Cormacks will be traveling from May 25-Aug. 3rd. Incoming Kinder News
Workout with the PE teachers for Incoming pre-K and Kindergarten students will be on Wednesday, May 23rd, 3 pm. Come meet our awesome P.E. teachers and learn why Summitt students love P.E. class! Siblings are welcome.
Fifth Grade News
Murchison transition camp introduces incoming 6th graders and newly registered students to many teachers, the building, shared areas such as the cafeteria, library, and gymnasium, and MMS traditions. It’s an opportunity to make new friends and connect with old ones. They invite and encourage all incoming 6th graders to attend one of the two sessions they will offer this summer. The dates are as follows:
Session 1 Wednesday, August 1 – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, August 2 – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Session 2 Wednesday, August 8 – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, August 9 – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Attendance is free. Additionally, during the Transition Camp, incoming PTA President Julie Choyce and Principal Clark will hold a Transitioning to MS for Parents meeting for parents of incoming students. Details TBA.
AISD and Community Events
“Field Day” at the park
As part of a community grant from St. David’s, Waller Creek Conservency will host free, family-friendly Field Day at Palm Park on Saturday, May 12th, 2018 (8:30am-12:30pm). Families can enjoy games for kids, raffle with great prizes, nourishing snacks, and more!
PROGRAM:
Field Day will feature a dynamic program throughout the event, with demonstrations including:
· 8:30 a.m. – Yoga Class by Yoga N Da Hood
· 9:30 a.m. – Cooking Demonstration by Green Ninja Cooks
· 10:30 a.m. – Step Performance by Campbell Elementary
· 11:30 a.m. – Live Music by G’beda
Touch A Truck
Touch-A-Truck is a fun-filled event for families to bond as their children explore the vehicles they’ve seen in movies, books, and just driving around town. From fire trucks and ambulances to backhoes and bulldozers, Touch-A-Truck has them all! It will be at on Saturday, May 12 from 10 am-3pm, at Camp Mabry. Tickets are $5 each. This event benefits SAFE. SAFE events like this directly support the hundreds of children in our care who receive housing, healing, and support. Touch-A-Truck represents what SAFE is all about: happy, healthy families in our community! More info here.

Austin ISD will host 5 Book Dive on Saturday, May 19, 10 am-3 pm, at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center. There will be author panels, book signings, book fair, etc. More info here.

SafeKids Austin hosts Summer Safety Fest on Saturday, June 9, 9-11 am at Seton Northwest Hospital. More info here.
Diving lessons
Austin Diving Academy offers diving lessons this summer at pools throughout the city. The closest one to this area is at Walnut Creek Pool. This is for students 8-18 years old. More info here.

AISD has a website that allows families to see exactly what apartments, duplexes, streets, etc are in each school attendance area. If you want to know if a certain apartment complex or house on a certain street is in Summitt’s school zone, there is a website that will help. Go to http://mobilityblueprint.net/, click on Go to Map, and you can either register or just sign in as a guest by putting in your Zip Code. From there, you can enter in an address or school to find out the schools in that area.
