Last Skate Night on Thursday
The last Skate Night of the year is Thursday, May 11th, from 6-8:30 p.m. at Playland Skate Center, 8822 McCann. It’s $6 per skater. Come out and have fun with our Summitt family!
Movie Night on Friday
Come join the fun at Summitt Movie Night on Friday, May 12th. We will be showing “Moana” and “The Secret Life of Pets” in the cafeteria and the Great Hall. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movies start around 7 p.m.
The week of Summitt Movie Night: Wednesday through Friday – tickets will be on sale before school in the car line (for exact change or check) and after school in the Great Hall for $5. Tickets at the door will be $6. A ticket will get you a snack pack with popcorn, a sweet, and a drink. Bring a blanket or a chair if you’d like. You may also purchase tickets by filling out the purchase tab at the bottom of the movie flyer in the Monday Folder and return it to your child’s teacher along with your check or cash payment. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Proceeds will benefit the Koblenz Exchange Program.
AISD Bond election Q&A session
Come and Learn the Facts! AISD is including a Bond in the November 2017 Election. Before making your decisions, learn how it will impact you. Kristin Ashy, our Facilities and Bond Planning Advisory Rep will be answering questions on Friday, May 12, from 7:30-8:30 am in the Summitt Library. Coffee will be served.

Need materials
This week our kinder and 1st grade students will be using materials that would otherwise be thrown away to make an animal from the fable, The Tortoise and the Hare. This is an extension project to our books and discussions about Earth Day, and a final project for some of our GT students. Students will make recycled art using toilet paper tubes, egg cartons, old boxes, and plastic containers. Most of this stuff we already have in plenty, but if you have any of the items listed, we’d sure love to take them off your hands. Please send them to the library or computer lab. Thanks!

Library Guinea Pig Time-Share
Have you always wanted two adorable Guinea Pigs to love and squeeze for a bit without the 5 to 8 year commitment? Now is your chance! The Summitt Elementary Guinea Pigs – Whiskers and Mouse – are looking for kind and caring Summitt families to care for them over the summer. They come with a cage on wheels, a wooden hutch, 2 “hamster holsters”, food bowls and water bottle, a blanket, a brush, a bath tub, and nail clippers.
Care is actually fairly minimal–feeding, watering, and cleaning the cage is required. Brushing, bathing, cuddling is all optional. They are sweet girls who will love your veggie scraps and be happy to expose your child to the ins and outs of pet care.
Time slots are set up by the week beginning and ending on Sundays, with the exception of the first slot. If you would like to keep them for more or less time, please contact me directly. Gifted and Talented End of Year Family Night
Rather than a final after school meeting, I thought it might be nice to change venues and time, and have a social gathering for the whole family on Wednesday, May 17 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Whole Foods Domain. Whole Foods has generously allowed us to use their community room upstairs, so feel free to bring the whole family, and pick up some dinner or dessert from downstairs. This will be something of a come and go event, but we will have a slide show of some of the year’s highlights, a Family Trivia competition, information about summer opportunities for your GT student, a make and take station, a book swap station (so, consider bringing a book or two to swap–parents, too!), and whatever other clever ideas come to me before then! You don’t want to miss it! There is no guest limit, but I would like to get an idea of who and how many people are coming. So, please RSVP. Thanks so much for a great year! Dual language picnic
The Vietnamese Dual Language Program would like to invite Dual Language families to an End of the Year Picnic on Sunday, May 21, 11:30 A.M – 2 P.M at the Summitt Elementary playground. We would like to ask each family to bring a dish as a potluck brunch. Pizzas and drinks will be provided by us for the children. Please bring a towel and an extra pair of clothes for your child to change in case he/she gets wet.

Stuffies in the Park
Summitt Fifth Grade Girl Scout Troop 1446 is hosting a fun event for girls aged 4-6 and for Daisy scouts on Saturday, May 13 from 2-4pm at Balcones District Park. It’s called “Stuffies in the Park.” Girls are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animal or “stuffie” with them for a Girl Scout adventure. We will have a scavenger hunt, first aid tips, stories, songs, and girls can earn a patch. The cost is $5 payable at the event. Share the event on Facebook and register in advance.

Meeting for Vietnam tour group
There will be a meeting on Monday, May 15 at 6 p.m. in the Library for anyone who is interested in going to Vietnam during Winter Break. Austin ISD’s first Diversity Day celebration will be on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Austin High School, 1715 Cesar Chavez St. Join Austin ISD for food, music, art, dancing and community resources at this celebration of our schools and students. Interpretation will be available for most languages. Free and open to the public!

TechLab STEAM Camp at Anderson
TechLab is a youth day camp that offers “hands-on” learning in science, technology, engineering, art and math like no other summer program in the greater Austin area. It offers curriculum and equipment that many children will NEVER see in their local elementary or middle school classrooms. TechLab is the result of an innovative partnership between the Capitol Area Council Boy Scouts of America, Austin Independent School District and Girl Scouts of Central Texas. Working alongside faculty from Anderson High School and across Austin Independent School District, we supply the latest tech and tech-art tools in an educational and safe yet fun and informal environment where campers can develop a passion for using technology to create and learn. Each year, our camp will ask children to pretend to be scientists trying to solve a challenge. This year, campers will pretend to go out to the rainforest to study how to complete scientific and discovery expeditions to Earth’s various rainforest regions. While doing so, kids won’t hear a lecture; they will ask the questions and they will use their imagination (and our tools) to find the answers. Click here for a flyer.

Free parenting workshop
Austin Child Guidance Center is offering a class on Internet Safety for kids and teens on Tuesday, May 16th from 6-7:30 PM at the Austin Child Guidance Center, 810 W. 45th Street. Parents will learn about general guidelines for online safety. Parents will leave this presentation with knowledge of what cyberbullying is, in addition to learning online safety tips and recommendations for elementary-aged children and adolescents. Anderson Belle Camp
Come dance with the Anderson Trojan Belles at their 2017 BELLES SUMMER DANCE CAMP, June 19th – 22nd at Murchison Middle School(new location). Full day elementary aged campers will learn dances, participate in daily arts & crafts and game time, perform with the Belles, and more! Theater summer camp
The Paramount Theatre is hosting a summer camp at nearby Davis Elementary, June 19-30. In Camp Story Wranglers students will explore story-writing, songwriting, costume and prop design, as well as acting, to create a new, thrilling, hilarious, weird, poignant, SNL-style, you-name-it production. The camp will not only challenge students to be creative writers, but will challenge them to bring their stories to life. Campers will be featured in a final performance downtown at Stateside at the Paramount on the final day of camp. Registration is now open and scholarships are available!
