UPCOMING EVENTS Save the Date for Summitt's STEAM Night Teachers and staff have been hard at work preparing for Summitt's STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Night on Thursday, January 16 from 6-7:30 pm. During the event, families will engage in various activity stations which will introduce students to concepts in STEAM disciplines. Through the STEAM night, Summitt hopes to inspire students to get excited about STEAM disciplines and careers. Science Fair Due Date Reminder All Summitt students submitting a project for the Summitt Science Fair should bring their projects to school on January 14. Judging will be held for grades 3-5 on January 15. All projects will be presented at the STEAM night event on January 16. For questions about the Science Fair, please contact the Summitt Front Office. Easter Seals Drive Fundraiser for Summitt PTA: January 13-17 Please mark your calendars and gather your old clothes. There is a fundraiser donation drive for Easter Seals. Donations can be dropped off until Friday in The Great Hall during school hours. A truck will be at Summit on Saturday, January 18, from 10 am-12 pm so you can drop off items then, too. Easter Seals will pay Summitt PTA 20 cents per pound for soft items like clothes, shoes, clothing accessories, sheets, small rugs, and similar items. They also pay 5 cents per pound for small household items such as dishes, pots, pans, small kitchen appliances or any other small items used in a home. Order online here (http://www.inter-state.com/yearbook) and enter code: 43148P Summitt Eagle Fun Run: February 17-28 We are so excited to announce that our school will be participating in the Apex Fun Run this year as our major Spring semester fundraiser! Apex Fun Run is a two-week interactive leadership program combined with a fun run fundraiser that helps schools all over the country raise funds, while promoting leadership, good character, and fitness. With parents' and guardians' help, students are challenged to get pledges for the laps they will run on Fun Run day to help our school. Students will run for 30 minutes and will run an average of 26-36 laps around the Apex Raceway. The maximum number of laps is 36 and each lap is 1/16th of a mile. Through Apex’s online pledging system, sponsors can pledge per lap or any flat donation amount for students, and can pledge from anywhere in the world! SUMMITT NEWS Principal Interview Committee We are embarking on a very exciting time for Summitt as we have an opportunity to choose a new principal. In January, AISD will hold a couple of listening meetings at Summitt where the community will be invited to share thoughts on what you'd like to see in a new principal. The Summitt Campus Advisory Committee (CAC) would love for you to be a part of this process and help us determine the person that will make many of the important decisions at our school. The dates and times of these meetings will be shared in Summitt's weekly email newsletter and on Facebook, so please be on the lookout! In addition, the CAC has been tasked with building a principal candidate interview committee made up of two parents and two teacher/staff members along with the two CAC Co-Chairs. This committee, which will also include the Associate Superintendent and Executive Director of Elementary Schools, will interview all candidates and recommend three finalists to the Superintendent for consideration. The Superintendent will then make the final recommendation to the Board of Trustees. If you are interested in serving on this interview committee, please send a letter of intent to Jennifer Ballow at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) by January 25, 2020. In your letter, please explain why you think you would be a good candidate for the committee. Your entry will then be discussed and final members will be determined via consensus by the Campus Advisory Council members at the January CAC meeting. If you are selected to serve on the committee, you will then be notified via email shortly after the meeting. Please be advised that this position will likely require availability on a week day afternoon between the hours of 3:30 and 4:30 pm in February or March 2020 at Summitt Elementary as well as availability to be at the AISD Central Office on a week day in February or March 2020 between the hours of 7:45 am and 5:00 pm. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide more specific dates, times, or locations at this time as this information is usually given two weeks before the committee has its first meeting. If you are unable to make the final dates provided by Superintendant's office, we will have to forfeit your submission and choose another candidate. She will discuss what our representatives are working on during the legislative break and what to expect from the next session. We'll also discuss how parents and students can get involved to impact issues they care about and effective ways of interacting with policymakers. Make it Matter Meet-up Chandra Villanueva, Program Director with the Center for Public Policy Priorities, will give a presentation on the funding of public schools in Texas. She will discuss the probable effects of the school funding legislation passed by the 2019 Texas Legislature, and the potential for improving funding of schools in Texas. Option to bring a packed lunch. The venue is kid-friendly if you want to bring your little ones. You can, and it ends up being an amazingly useful tool for parents. In this workshop, parents learn about each of the stages of a tantrum, including examples of what they look like and how to be sure you are able to recognize what your child looks like in various stages. We’ll talk about the various tools that parents can use to effectively manage behavior at each stage. Using the right tool at the right moment makes all the difference!
