TRANSITION TO A LOCKED CAMPUS

25 Jan
Summitt becomes a Locked Campus

Jan 28, 2013

Dear Summitt Parents/Guardians/Community Members:
The next phase of Summitt becoming a locked campus will happen on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.  Here are the new things:

  • New Office hours will be 7:10 AM to 4:00 PM
  • On Tuesday, January 29th, all exterior doors will be locked. The exception is the front school doors which will be unlocked from 7:10 – 7:45 a.m. The doors will be locked at 7:45 a.m. At this time, any visitor remaining in the school will be required to come to office to get a badge. Morning announcement will occur to remind everyone at this time to obtain a badge. (Please remember to check out with your badge when you leave by scanning it again.- – Thank you!) We want parents to continue to have the opportunity to wait with their children and walk their child to their classroom. Please remember as your child becomes older it is important for them to begin to learn to become independent by learning to do things for themselves such as going to class, unpacking their own backpack and turning in their papers.
  • Staff will be at the front door at 7:45 AM to issue tardy slips to students and will have the student white index cards for parents to sign if their child is tardy. If a student shows up to their class without a slip, they will be sent to the office to obtain a slip. (This slip is a new process.)
  • Anyone waiting to enter the school building after 7:45 AM will need to come to the front door and ring the door bell. The office staff will be able to see the person(s) on the school camera. They will buzz in the person to enter to come to the office to obtain a visitor badge.
  • The commons doors which are the interior double doors to the first grade area, second grade area and the third grade area will remain unlocked until 8 AM to accommodate students coming in tardy. After that time, an office staff will escort students to class or the classroom teacher will be called in order for students to be able to enter their commons area. This includes the annex building for our fourth and fifth grade students and our portable building classrooms.
  • Parents who need to pick up their child(ren)early, will need to have a badge and a slip in order to get that student from cafeteria, outside, etc. or the student will be called to come to the office.
  • Lunch – Parents that choose to eat in the courtyard will be locked out. Therefore, if another parent is inside and sees that a parent WITH A BADGE is knocking for access back into the building, they may open the door. We want to encourage Summitt community support. If the person does not have a badge, please have them go to the office.
  • Pre-Kg teachers will begin to bring all of their class to the library in the afternoon on Monday, January 28th. Safety patrol will go to the library to pick up their group. Pre-Kg parents will come to the library to pick up their student in the afternoons until further notice. (A letter will be sent home to these parents.)
  • Until the next phase of our ‘roll out’, the afternoon pick up will continue as it has been occurring. All parents who are coming in the building to pick up their child(ren) at the end of the school day will wait in the front area of the great hall behind the rolling bulletin boards.
  • After school programs are being informed of the changes and that they need to walk their students to the area told to parent s for pick up. There will not be anyone to open the front door with the buzzer after 4:00. The exception is our Extend-A-Care. They will have their own door bell/parent system. These parents will be receiving a letter from Extend-A-Care of their procedures.
  • Please remember that only staff with proper badges will be allowed to enter the building through locked doors with instructions to not allow anyone to follow.
  • A parent signature will be on the bottom of the letter that will be going home in student Monday folders which will require a signature that they have received this information.

Thank you again for your continued support as we all adapt to these new changes.

Parents/Guardians/Community Members:
First, I want to thank everyone for their support and patience as Summitt becomes a ‘locked‘ campus. On Tuesday, January 22 our journey will continue. Many of you may have already noticed that Summitt teachers have begun to keep their classroom doors locked and parents are scanning their visitor badges as they leave the building. On Tuesday, January 22 the Art patio door and the computer hallway door be locked at all times. Only staff members with keys and badges will be able to enter through these doors. For this week, please begin becoming use to entering the building by the front door. Only during this week will the music hallway door be opened in the morning along with the gym door.
Please remember to come to the office to obtain a visitor’s badge to be on campus after 7:45 AM and before 2:45 PM.  Please ask anyone who you see on campus without a badge to come to the office for a badge.
Beginning Tuesday, January 29th, Summitt will be a full locked campus. More information about what this will look like as well as specific procedures will be forth coming.
It will take everyone’s efforts to learn these new guidelines. I appreciate your support as Summitt becomes a safer place for our students.

Dear Parents/Guardians, Students, and Staff:

Welcome Back! It was a successful first week back! Your student(s) may be talking about changes happening around Summitt. Summitt is beginning to implement changes to become a ‘locked‘ campus. Please keep your eye posted for upcoming information concerning our Summitt campus as we continue to prepare Summitt to become a ‘locked‘ campus. We know that stopping an intruder is impossible; however, our goal is to slow him/her down. Once everything is in place, all Summitt doors will become locked. Only staff with proper badges will be allowed to enter the building through locked doors with instructions to not allow anyone to follow. Parents/Guardians/Community members will need to enter the school from the front door once they have rung the doorbell and staff releases the lock. There is the understanding that this new system will take some time to become a regular habit. We all need to keep in mind that this is for the safety of Summitt students, staff and people within the building. Thank you for your patience and understanding. More information is to come once the system becomes active. You will be informed of the date when everything goes into effect. Thank you for having your Summitt student(s) to school on time everyday.
